With Hong Kong continuing to host mega sports and tourism events and the Government actively promoting the “+Tourism” initiative and sports-related industries, the Vocational Training Council (VTC) remains committed to nurturing vocational and professional talent in sports, tourism and hospitality, while further enhancing its teaching facilities. Officiated by the Permanent Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Vivian SUM, the brand‑new Hospitality Hong Kong Centre held its opening ceremony today (12 March). The Centre features a range of smart and immersive teaching facilities in sports, tourism and catering, equipping students with the latest industry knowledge and skills for future career development.

The Permanent Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Vivian SUM stated that in the 2026-27 Budget, the Government announced that it will continue promoting the integrated development of culture, sports and tourism to provide better urban living experience for residents and visitors. The close and mutually reinforcing relationship between sports and tourism will be fully manifested in the newly established Hospitality Hong Kong Centre.

In addressing the event, VTC Chairman Jeffrey LAM said that the establishment of the Hospitality Hong Kong Centre marked a significant milestone in VTC’s Vocational and Professional Education and Training (VPET). It also demonstrated VTC’s strong support for developing Hong Kong as a centre for mega international events. As a new facility for nurturing professional talent in hotel, tourism and sports, the Centre provides a professional and interactive learning environment that enhances students’ practical skills through advanced teaching facilities. He added that VTC would continue to align with Hong Kong’s development and industry needs, cultivating skilled talent, injecting impetus into the services industry.

Advanced Teaching Facilities Across Three Sectors, Aligned with Industry Trends

Located at the Chai Wan campus of the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE), a member institution of the VTC, the Hospitality Hong Kong Centre spans approximately 400 square metres. Equipped with a variety of advanced teaching facilities, the Centre serves as an integrated training centre of the VTC Hospitality Discipline, providing professional training in hotel and catering, leisure and sports, tourism and Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE), and culinary arts.

Aligned with the Government’s efforts to promote sports in the community, support elite sports, maintain Hong Kong’s position as a centre for major international sports events, enhance professionalism, and develop the sports industry, the Centre provides industry-standard facilities to nurture talent across the sports, recreation and entertainment industries. For instance, fencing has become increasing popular in recent years. The Centre is equipped with a 14‑metre fencing piste supported by a professional scoring system and training equipment. This enables students to learn safety guidelines, competition rules and techniques, preparing them for future professional roles such as fencing coaches and judges. The Centre also features a range of smart sports facilities, including a large electronic reaction light wall and a “STEAM Fitness Hallway” equipped with industry‑standard pneumatic‑resistance training equipment, widely used by professional sports teams and premium fitness centres. By analysing training data, students learn to design personalised training plans for athletes, laying a solid foundation for careers in sports coaching and exercise technology. In addition, the Centre houses multiple smart rehabilitation and fitness machines with adjustable seats and interactive modes for seniors or individuals with joint concerns, helping students develop both rehabilitation and tailored training skills.

In tourism talent training, to support the Government’s “Tourism is Everywhere” initiative and the rising popularity of in‑depth tourism, VTC has strengthened training in tour guiding and tourism operations for students in tourism‑related programmes. In addition to showcasing tourism information, the Centre features an immersive Virtual Reality CAVE system that simulates iconic attractions such as Ngong Ping Village and The Peak. By exploring diverse tourism environments, students can experience different tourism contexts and Hong Kong’s local cultural storytelling, developing cross cultural communication skills and enhancing their readiness to handle real world tourism scenarios.

For the training of food and beverage and hospitality talent, the Centre also features a dedicated training space for wine appreciation and barista skills, equipped with industry‑standard coffee machines. Through systematic training programmes, students develop professional skills in sensory evaluation, beverage preparation, bar management, inventory control, customer service and crafting innovative drinks. Complemented by the training restaurant at IVE (Chai Wan), students in hotel and catering programmes can further enhance their culinary and service skills in an environment that closely mirrors real industry settings.

Beyond student training, the Hospitality Hong Kong Centre also serves as a venue for secondary school workshops, taster activities and industry talks, introducing young people to the diverse development pathways in the sports, tourism and hospitality sectors, helping secondary school students explore potential careers early and gain a better understanding of Hong Kong’s growing sports, tourism, and hospitality industries.
