Over the years, VTC students and graduates have put their knowledge and skills to good use and develop smart solutions for the betterment of society.

    Portable Near Infrared (NIR) Rapid Authentication System for Chinese Medicine

    Co-developed by THEi BSc (Hons) in Chinese Medicinal Pharmacy student-teacher team and a MedTech company

    The system applies blockchain, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and near-infrared light (NIR) spectroscopy detection technology to fast Chinese medicine quality control. Users can verify the origin and quality of Chinese medicine by scanning the sample via a portable spectrometer and data matching from encrypted cloud database.

    iStick

    Co-developed by an IVE cross-disciplinary team of Engineering and Health and Life Sciences Higher Diploma students

    iStick is well equipped with a front camera which uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to analyse and detect obstacles ahead, read out loud to remind the visually impaired of the actual road conditions. Its optical sensor can measure the user’s heart rate and blood oxygen level, the readings will be transmitted to the mobile app in real time, enabling family members to provide remote support.

    Multi-lens Live Cast Mobile App

    Developed by IVE Information Technology Students

    “MixTra-Cam” is a mobile application which allows users to use a mobile phone or tablet to perform multi-camera live broadcast. The app has won HK$1 million seed capital under Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation’s Science and Technology Entrepreneur Programme Science and Technology Entrepreneur Programme (STEP), aiming to reform the traditional mode of live broadcast.

    U-trap Refill Automator

    Designed by IVE Engineering Students

    To help the community prevent virus spreading through drainage pipes, this smart device leverages the Internet of Things (IoT) technology to enable users to monitor the water level in U-traps and refill them automatically through a mobile app. This innovative solution has received the Gold Award in the Innovative Design Competition organised by the Urban Renewal Authority and will be trialed in some 2,000 residential buildings, a real-life demonstration of practising innovation for social good.
