The “Pharmacy Walkthrough” co-developed by teachers and students of IVE Higher Diploma in Dispensing Studies programme and the Centre for Learning and Teaching uses VR technology to create a 360° virtual tour of the campus’ simulated pharmacy. Students can equip themselves with professional dispensing knowledge while staying at home during the pandemic

The Vocational Training Council (VTC) is to participate in the Virtual InnoCarnival 2020 organised by the Innovation and Technology Commission. The event will be held online (https://innocarnival.hk) for the first time from 23 December (Wednesday) to 31 December (Thursday). Under the theme of “Collaborate.Innovate.Beyond Imagination”, teachers and students from VTC member institution, Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) are to showcase various innovative technological projects on the occasion, demonstrating how they have put knowledge to good use and designed creative products to help the community to adapt to the “new normal”.

Ten innovative projects developed by teachers and students of the Engineering Discipline, the Information Technology Discipline and the Health and Life Sciences Discipline of IVE, are to be displayed at the Virtual InnoCarnival 2020. Among them is the “STEMBot Coffee” co-developed by teachers and students of IVE Higher Diploma in Mechanical Engineering programme and the VTC STEM Education Centre. The team uses robot programming, artificial intelligence (AI)-aided image recognition, and mobile application programming technologies to develop a robotic arm as part of the “STEMBot”. Users can choose the coffee type and latte art on the app. The robotic arm will automatically place the cup under the coffee machine, and then make coffee and the latte art. The team said making coffee with the robotic arm could also help maintain social distancing during the pandemic. In the future, they hope to enhance the mobile app and add more functions like making different drinks to provide more choices.

Another showcase is the “Mobile Holographic Video Conferencing” system designed by IVE graduates of the Higher Diploma in Software Engineering programme. In the face of the pandemic, online meetings and online teaching have become the new normal. In response to the change, IVE graduates developed the system to enable users to conduct online 3D chats conveniently. The design employs technologies such as image analysis and machine learning to process the images of conference participants. The images will then be sent out to a designated projecting device to re-produce 3D images of the participants, making the conference more engaging and interactive.

Meanwhile, the “Pharmacy Walkthrough” developed by teachers and students of IVE Higher Diploma in Dispensing Studies programme and the Centre for Learning and Teaching uses Virtual Reality (VR) technology to create an online 360° virtual tour of the campus’ simulated pharmacy. Students can “navigate” the VR pharmacy and click on the interactive buttons to know more about the dispensing processes, like searching medications, preparing drug labels and handling prescriptions. The design enables students to equip themselves with professional dispensing knowledge while staying at home during the pandemic.

Other creative projects include the “Smart Elderly Watching U Monitoring System” for remote monitoring of the wellbeing of the elderly, the “Smart Living Home” incorporating gerontechnology, the “VR Interactive Animations”, and more.

The Virtual InnoCarnival 2020 will be held online for the first time. The public can access the event via the link https://innocarnival.hk to learn more about the work of VTC teachers and students. The participants can also join an array of free activities such as Webinars and InnoTech Online Workshops. During the Carnival period, VTC representatives will host webinars including “How the Internet of Things (IoT) is Building Smarter Cities?” by Dr George LAU, Principal of IVE (Tuen Mun) and Deputy Academic Director (Engineering), and Laboratory Diagnosis Acts as a Key of Long-term Preventive Measure in Hong Kong” by Daniel LAU, Lecturer of the Department of Health and Life Sciences of IVE (Sha Tin). Participants who have successfully registered earlier can also join the InnoTech Online Workshops led by VTC representatives.

Established in 1982, the Vocational Training Council (VTC) is the largest vocational and professional education and training provider in Hong Kong.
