Youth College’s Open Day 2023
Application for DVE and VB programmes opens (3 and 10 March)
-
Seven campuses of Youth College, a member institution of the Vocational Training Council (VTC), will be holding Open Days in cohorts on two consecutive Fridays next month, 3 and 10 March (www.yc.edu.hk/openday). Students and parents are invited to tour the campuses to obtain more study information and try out Youth College’s diverse teaching and learning facilities to experience the fun of interactive learning.
Members of the public are welcome to register, online or by fax, for campus tours. The Open Days will feature a rich assortment of activities to showcase Youth College’s teaching approach which integrates the training of professional skills with the fun of learning. These include virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) learning activities, basic know-how of gas services engineering, and demonstrations of 3D tailoring, nail art, commercial product photography and live commerce. (Please refer to Annex 2 for details).
In tandem, a 360-degree virtual campus facility tour will be made available for students and parents. This will feature professional facilities like the 3D Printing and VR/AR Learning Zones in the VTC STEM Education Centre, the Hong Kong Vehicle Information Centre, the Hair Design Workshop, Beauty Care Workshop and Business Event Operation Studio.
In the 2023/24 academic year, Youth College will offer 22 full-time Diploma of Vocational Education (DVE) programmes to Secondary 3 to 5 students, covering the three study areas of Business and Services, Engineering, and Design and Information Technology. The diverse programme options cater to different industry needs, including beauty care and hairdressing, electric engineering, automotive technology, information technology, business, image design, food technology and nutrition, design and print media, jewellery design and technology, and fashion. Comprising different modules that cover generic skills, professional training and whole person development, Youth College’s DVE programmes blend technology into the curriculum to help students grasp the latest workplace know-how. Based on their interests, students can choose the programmes they most favour to plan their progression pathways for further study or employment.
DVE programmes provide seamless progression routes for further study and professional development, allowing qualified graduates* to progress to VTC Higher Diploma programmes. Separately, students of designated DVE programmes can opt to join the VTC Earn & Learn Scheme which integrates structured classroom learning with on-the-job training, enabling them to earn a steady income while acquiring the necessary knowledge and development skills to pursue a career in industries with keen manpower demand.
Meanwhile, the Vocational Baccalaureate (VB) Programme provides students completing Secondary 3 or above with flexible study options recognised both locally and internationally. With English as the medium of instruction, the VB Programme offers modules in English, Chinese and Mathematics benchmarked with the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) levels and makes reference to global standards by adopting the Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) Level 3 Extended Diploma programmes. The three-year VB Programme covers three professional areas, namely Design, Engineering and Sport. Graduates can go on to study in local or overseas universities or progress to Bachelor’s Degree or Higher Diploma programmes in VTC on the strength of their internal and external academic results.
Interested Secondary 3 to 5 students can apply for DVE and VB programmes through VTC’s Web-based Admissions System or submit the completed application form to the Youth College (Kwai Fong) to gain a head start in planning for their future and chasing their dreams.
Rey YU Zefeng, a graduate of the DVE (Business) programme, had already shown interest in business subjects during his secondary education years. He sought to further this interest by learning professional skills at Youth College to prepare him for entering the world of work. Rey says he found the project-based learning (PBL) approach of DVE programmes offered by Youth College different from that of conventional academic education, with the DVE programmes emphasising vocational practice and professional skills. On one occasion, he undertook a product launch project to market a smart water bottle. He wrote the proposal, designed and produced the product, and even took up the marketing work. Eventually, his efforts paid off and the bottles went on sale. He found the all-round learning experience also bolstered his confidence, providing a solid foundation for his future studies and career development.
After graduation, Rey progressed to the Higher Diploma in Advertising Design programme with the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI), another member institution of the VTC. During his HKDI studies, he came in third in the “WorldSkills Competition - BeChangeMaker 2022” with his one-stop eco-information platform “EcoLife”. Users of this platform can develop personal green living habits by sharing eco information and earning reward points after completing assigned tasks. Rey looks forward to develop his own business with what he has learnt, while studying for higher qualifications at the same time.
