VTC participates in InnoCarnival 2024
I&T projects demonstrate vocational skills for creating a smart future
-
The Vocational Training Council (VTC) is participating in the nine-day InnoCarnival 2024 taking place from today (October 26) at the Hong Kong Science Park, showcasing over 10 innovative and technology (I&T) applied projects developed by teachers and students of its member institutions namely the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi), the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE), and the Hong Kong Institute of Information Technology (HKIIT). The exhibits integrate creativity and technological knowledge to provide solutions to daily problems, thereby promoting smart living and demonstrating the fruitful learning outcomes of vocational and professional education and training (VPET).
The InnoCarnival 2024 is organised by the Innovation and Technology Commission with the theme of “Let’s Sail with Innovation and Technology”. VTC presents its booth with the theme “Empowering VPET Talent for a Smart Future”, showcasing 11 exhibits to demonstrate how VPET students have applied what they have learnt to propose innovative ideas for a smart future, making good use of technologies to enhance the quality of life. One of the featured exhibits is “Life Projection”, an innovative event message platform developed by the HKIIT student team. Powered by game engine and web programming skills, the platform allows users to add visual effects and leave messages after taking photos with their devices. The unique photos and messages would be uploaded to the cloud and displayed on the platform, capturing the memorable moments of an event.
Another exhibit is the “Smart Dent: AI-powered Oral Health Assessment” brought by the Health and Life Sciences Discipline of IVE. The application utilises deep learning and image recognition technologies to analyse the user’s oral images and assess oral health conditions. Dental hygienists can then provide preliminary dental care suggestions. The booth also features a simulated dental chair and some dental equipment, allowing visitors to simulate dental treatments such as teeth scaling, polishing, and oral hygiene consultation, to better understand oral and dental health in an interactive way.
To address social problems of wide public concern, students from IVE Engineering Discipline have proposed two creative solutions supported by technologies and professional knowledge. The projects include the “Rat Detector”, which tracks mice movements and activity to locate the mouse nets using a smart positioning system put on a mouse; another project “Smart Renewable Energy System: SolWind Tree” is a device that can capture both wind and solar power. Equipped with automatic light tracking and wind speed monitoring systems, the device can adjust its position and height in response to environmental changes. The design helps enhance power efficiency and ensure the parts are securely in place, providing a more reliable supply of renewable energy. The event will also showcase various applied projects developed by students and teachers of THEi that offers applied science-oriented degree programmes, demonstrating the innovative achievements in the areas of arts, cultural heritage and food manufacturing. Among these are healthy pet treats made by food by-products and a chewy tapioca pearl snack made with Chinese herbal ingredients.
Visitors can visit the InnoCarnival 2024 at the Hong Kong Science Park from today till 3 November, to experience how I&T leads to smart living. During the exhibition, VTC will host several workshops, including HKIIT’s “Wonderland” where visitors can build immersive augmented reality digital scenes; the hydrogen fuel cell taster workshop hosted by IVE Engineering Discipline to learn about the theory of hydrogen energy; the “Dental Care” workshop delivered by IVE Health and Life Sciences Discipline on common dental problems and dental care knowledge, as well as a workshop on sports science hosted by THEi in which expert speakers will introduce and demonstrate related technologies.
