VTC Wins Triple Gold at Global Future Design Awards 2025
advancing VPET through innovative learning spaces
-
Three campus development projects by the Vocational Training Council (VTC) have been awarded “Gold Winner” at the internationally renowned “Global Future Design Awards 2025,” earning global and industry recognition for VTC’s innovative approach to campus planning and educational facility design. The achievement further reflects VTC’s commitment to creating flexible, diverse, and industry-aligned learning environments that enhance student learning outcomes and support the development of Vocational and Professional Education and Training (VPET) in Hong Kong.
The Global Future Design Awards 2025, hosted by international architectural media platform Architecture Press Release, aims to recognise visionary, innovative, and socially impactful design projects. Three campus development projects— the VTC Aviation and Maritime Education Centre, new campus project at Cha Kwo Ling, and the Jockey Club Dental Care Training Centre—were awarded “Gold Winner”, signifying their excellence in combining aesthetics, functionality, and sustainable development. These projects are set to become landmark facilities within VTC, and establish a new benchmark for the design of future educational spaces.
VTC is deeply encouraged by this recognition. Executive Director Mr Donald TONG Chi-keung said, “In an era of rapid industry development and continuous innovation in learning models, diverse and forward-looking learning and teaching environments are essential to the advancement of VPET. We extend our appreciation to the design teams for their ingenuity in creatively transforming VTC’s educational vision into inspiring physical learning spaces. These awards not only affirm the excellence of the design teams, but also represent international recognition of VTC’s efforts in advancing quality educational facilities, demonstrating our commitment to enhancing teaching quality and nurturing future talent.” VTC Estate and Campus Development Office served as the project and design management lead for all three projects, supporting the planning and execution of campus development initiatives.
Innovative Design Features
The VTC Aviation and Maritime Education Centre (AMEC) was awarded “Gold Winner” under the Educational Architecture (Under Construction) category. AMEC is a seven-storey building scheduled for opening in the 2025/26 academic year. The AMEC façade draws inspiration from aviation and maritime forms. The upper elevated portion resembles the profile of aircraft’s ailerons on the side and passenger boarding bridge on its front elevation, while the lower welcoming portion works with maritime abstraction. Together these elements create an innovative, technological atmosphere that signals the school’s dedication to forward-thinking learning and commitment to cutting-edge education.
The design team conducted comprehensive environmental analysis, referencing sun paths and exposure levels to optimise window positioning, selection of high-performance glass, and detailed roofing system. These thoughtful strategies are to enhance the natural lighting and ventilation efficiency, seamlessly integrating energy efficiency, user comfort, and the façade design.
The design of the new campus project at Cha Kwo Ling was awarded “Gold Winner” in the category of Educational Architecture (Concept). It embodies a spirit of inclusivity, diversity, and boundless opportunity, expressed through the philosophical concept of "the sea embraces all rivers." This vision is realised through the "Blossom Ensemble" landscape theme, featuring diverse flowering seasons and colors, combined with the "Wide Sea and Vast Sky" interior design concept. Together, these elements symbolise the diversity of VPET education and the multifaceted talents and potential of its students.
Inspired by the dynamic motion of waves, the architectural and landscape design language using sculptural wavy and curvy form reflects the dynamic motion of water and waves, symbolising students embarking on their future study journeys. The design incorporates a new campus spatial planning principle - the "Future and Flexible Inter-disciplinary Campus" - exploring multiple perspectives to unlock spatial potential and infuse the campus with flexibility and forward-looking vision. The campus consists of two building blocks – East Block and West Block – connected by an elevated landscape deck. Designed in white wavy form to simulate a water splash, the elevated deck links to the 1/F outdoor landscape area at campus, enhancing connectivity to the promenade.
The Jockey Club Dental Care Training Centre (Centre) was awarded “Gold Winner” under the Healthcare Interior Design (Under Construction) category. Inspired by teeth and dental tools, the design concept features abstracted curves and lines that are seamlessly woven into the interior architecture. An illuminated high-speed handpiece with an LED light representing water sprays radiates outward to create a striking visual effect. The colour palette with ivory as the natural colour of a tooth creates a soft, warm-tone ambience. Overall, the design aims to translate dentistry symbols to generate a contemporary yet unique identity. The Centre will be equipped with 32 industry-standard dental chairs and advanced equipment, providing students studying the Professional Diploma in Dental Hygiene programme with a comprehensive learning environment to master professional skills and operational competencies.
