The Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (DSE) brings about a pivotal moment for students, when they have to make decisions on their future paths. In addition to ensuring they have sufficient information on the various further study opportunities available, the support and companionship of family members plays a crucial role. To help meet this need, the Vocational Training Council (VTC) will join the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG) over the coming months to co-host a two-talk Parents’ Programme. This initiative will update parents on the diverse progression paths on offer as well as equip them with soft skills in parent-child communication, helping them take better care of their children's emotions and establish a closer parent-child relationship.

With a wide range of different options nowadays available for further studies, students should find little difficulty in choosing a subject that best matches their personality, abilities and interests. The first talk, themed “DSE Pathways 101”, is scheduled for 23 March (Saturday). Presented by Joseph TSANG, Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Association of Careers Masters and Guidance Masters, it will walk attendees through the latest study choices, supported with statistical analysis to address parents' questions about further education, and help them to assist their children to shape their future. Parents and students who attend the talk in person at the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) (Haking Wong) in Cheung Sha Wan can enjoy a guided campus tour of IVE's teaching and learning facilities afterwards, including the IoT Technology Centre, Tourism and Aviation Training Centre and Retail Lab.

The second talk, titled “Tips on Soft Skills Development”, is scheduled for 13 April (Saturday) at the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) in Tseung Kwan O. The role of parents is recognised as being critical in safeguarding their children's mental well-being. With the issue of emotional health having raised substantial attention from the society in recent years, Clinical Psychologist Olivia LI will offer effective strategies and practical tips to enhance parent-child communication, with a view to helping parents to identify potential emotional challenges in their children as early as possible and cultivate their problem-solving skills, adaptability and communication skills as a means of bolstering their overall resilience. The talk will be followed by a guided tour of HKDI’s campus facilities, including the HKDI Media Lab, Fashion Archive and Denim Studio.

The Parents’ Programme is free of charge. Parents and other interested parties are welcome to register online at http://www.vtc.edu.hk/cpro/talk or call 2836 1888 for enquiries.
