CLP Power and Vocational Training Council Sign New MoU to Accelerate Sustainability Journey and Nurture Young Energy Management Professionals
-
CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP Power) and the Vocational Training Council (VTC) signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 7 July to further strengthen collaboration in energy conservation, electrification, and the development of energy management professionals.
Under the new agreement, CLP Power will assist the VTC to achieve its carbon reduction targets. This includes adopting CLP Power's Smart Energy Online platform at appropriate campuses to monitor and manage electricity usage data across different locations thus enhancing energy efficiency and reducing operational costs. In addition, CLP Power will help the VTC explore introducing electrification in its teaching facilities to further enhance energy efficiency and reduce emissions.
To nurture a new generation of energy management professionals, CLP Power will continue to provide energy audit training for VTC students. The initiative gives students the opportunity to inspect electrical equipment on campuses, providing them with the opportunity to gain practical experience in identifying energy-saving opportunities and devising plans to improve campus energy efficiency.
CLP Holdings Chief Executive Officer Mr T. K. Chiang said, “CLP Power and the VTC have always worked closely on energy efficiency and talent development. This new MoU will enable us to promote sustainable development even further. By deepening energy-saving measures and accelerating electrification, we believe we can achieve more significant carbon reduction results. CLP Power will continue to draw on its expertise to help businesses in different sectors enhance their energy efficiency, working together to achieve Hong Kong's carbon neutrality goal by 2050."
VTC Chairman Mr Tony Tai said, “CLP Power and the VTC have been long-standing partners over the years, collaborating closely on power engineering related programmes. CLP Power has provided VTC students with internships, job opportunities and scholarships to encourage them to pursue careers in power engineering. Committed to environmental protection and sustainable development, the VTC actively supports the Government's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 through campus development and talent cultivation. This signing ceremony marks a new milestone in our collaboration with CLP Power. I trust that through our joint efforts, we can inject new momentum into Hong Kong’s vocational and professional education and training and the energy industry, fostering a greener future together.”
Over the past two years, CLP Power has provided energy audit training to VTC students. As part of this initiative, students have completed energy audits on 17 VTC premises and proposed multiple energy efficiency improvement plans. It is estimated that, once all the energy-saving proposals have been completed, the campuses will save 3.7 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity annually, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of more than 1,100 households and a reduction of over 1,400 tonnes of carbon emissions.
CLP Power has a long-standing talent training partnership with the VTC, providing professional training and career development pathways for individuals aspiring to join the power industry. These include part-time programmes in electrical and mechanical engineering, co-organised by CLP Power Academy and the VTC, ranging from Diploma and Professional Diploma levels. CLP Power also organises training courses for high-voltage and low-voltage electrical workers with the VTC and the Guangzhou Industry and Trade Technician College. These courses help local industrial practitioners to seize opportunities in the Greater Bay Area and advance their careers. In addition, a CLP Power Engineering Laboratory has been established at Haking Wong campus of the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE), a member institution of the VTC. The laboratory is equipped with advanced technology and professional training facilities to enhance students' understanding of high-voltage power systems and smart grid technologies, and to cultivate a new generation of power engineering professionals.
