Comprehensive support for VPET development

This scholarship has been established with a generous donation by Dr Roy Chung to recognise students’ excellence in toy design and outstanding academic performance during the Higher Diploma in Product Design study at the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI).

Dr Roy Chung has always supported the development of Vocational and Professional Education and Training (VPET) passionately. Apart from setting up the “Outstanding Toy Design Scholarship” through Bright Future Charitable Foundation, he has also established three new initiatives for students progressing to VTC Higher Diploma programmes and the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi).

Challenges in design thinking

Sam Choi, a champion recipient of “Bright Future Charitable Foundation – Outstanding Toy Design Scholarship” and Higher Diploma in Product Design student, discovered the curriculum demands were different than previously thought. He only found this out after joining the programme which required extensive market research to be undertaken before the actual design work. So, when conceptualising his product design as a competitive entry to the scholarship, he first made visits to toy shops of varying size for observation. “Having compared more than a hundred shooting games, I decided to add the element of judgment, one that is rarely seen in the market, to my design to make it more interesting for players with a unique combination of thinking and response.”

Taking a leaf from the industry

The scholarship judging panel is made up of top professionals from the toy industry. Being awarded the scholarship has boosted Sam’s self-confidence and bestowed him other benefits. “The judges reminded me to take note of market needs and suggested the addition of electronic elements to raise the game to a higher level, given the increasing popularity of electronic toys. After graduation, I plan to further my studies in the hope of becoming a well-rounded product design professional,” he said.

Bright Future Charitable Foundation sponsors three new initiatives, including “Outstanding Student-Athlete Scholarship”, “STEM in PE Design Competition” and “Outstanding Green Scholarship”, which are named after the foundation in tribute to Dr Chung’s contributions to VPET.

Support for outstanding student-athletes admitted to VPET programmes

The purpose of launching “Bright Future Charitable Foundation – Outstanding Student-Athlete Scholarship” is to provide financial assistance for recipients to cover their education expenses, supporting their progression to VTC Higher Diploma programmes or bachelor’s degree programmes at THEi.

Promoting VPET and STEM

“Bright Future Charitable Foundation – STEM in PE Design Competition” is a STEM competition catering for primary and secondary students. On the one hand, it seeks to promote VPET and VTC programmes among the target audience. On the other, it aims to promote participation in STEM application-based and physical education conducted in schools. VTC students will have the chance to undertake the roles of competition organisers and project supervisors. This will give them the opportunity to apply what they have learnt on society.

Encouraging green professional development

“Bright Future Charitable Foundation – Outstanding Green Scholarship” is aimed at commending THEi’s Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Horticulture, Arboriculture and Landscape Management students with good academic results and outstanding performance in horticulture and arboriculture.
