VTC establishes Hong Kong Institute of Information Technology for grooming IT talents

The Vocational Training Council (VTC) is pleased to announce today, Wednesday, 1 November, the establishment of the Hong Kong Institute of Information Technology (HKIIT), the 14th VTC’s member institution dedicated to offering IT and relevant technology programmes for students, working adults and industry practitioners. The HKIIT, aspiring to be a distinguished and reputable provider of IT education in the region, strives to nurture IT talents to enhance Hong Kong’s competitive advantage in IT and foster a skilled workforce in Hong Kong. The institute will commence its operation to address the pressing industry demand and have its first cohort of students in the academic year (AY) 2024/25.

Under the framework of HKIIT, we are dedicated to providing more comprehensive support of manpower training to the Government's innovation and technology policies, as well as facilitating the digital transformation of various industries. " stated Mr Tony TAI, VTC Chairman.

The HKIIT will cultivate a new generation of skilled IT professionals to address the strong manpower demand across diverse industries. The HKIIT marks a significant milestone in the vocational and professional education and training (VPET), shaping the future of Hong Kong’s IT talent development.” said Mr Donald TONG, VTC Executive Director.

To ensure the successful development of the HKIIT, the VTC has appointed the Academic Director of the Information Technology Discipline, Ir Dr John HUI, as the Principal of the HKIIT. Dr Hui with a wealth of rich and extensive experience in both the dynamic IT industry and the higher education sector will lead a dedicated planning team to prepare for the launch and operation of the HKIIT. The HKIIT Advisory Board with members comprising industry experts and led by Mr Raymond CHENG (Former Chief Operating Officer, Asia Pacific, HSBC), has also been formed to advise the VTC on the strategic development of the institute.

In addition to its focus on pre-employment training like Higher Diploma and Diploma of Foundation Studies programmes, the HKIIT recognises the importance of lifelong learning and professional development in the industry. To address this need, the HKIIT has established an in-service training service named as “SkillsUp”; with closer collaborations with industry partners, professionals and stakeholders to offer both reskilling and upskilling training programmes for the industry practitioners, corporate professionals and workforce.

The HKIIT programme offerings will cover industry skill demands and emerging areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cybersecurity, Blockchain, Data Science, Web 3.0, Internet of Things, Robotics Applications, Automotive Intelligence Technology and more. These programmes will equip students with the future ready skills to excel in the ever-evolving digital landscape. Subject to the approval of Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ), the relevant IT and technology programmes currently offered by IVE will be transitioned to HKIIT starting from AY2024/25.

Established in 1982, the Vocational Training Council (VTC) is the largest vocational and professional education and training provider in Hong Kong. The mission of VTC is to provide a valued choice to school leavers and working people to acquire the values, knowledge and skills for lifelong learning and enhanced employability, and also to provide support to industries for their manpower development.
