Ir James KWAN Yuk-choi is formerly Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of Hong Kong and China Gas Limited (Towngas), and Executive Director of Towngas China Company Limited before retiring in 2013. Ir Kwan is currently Independent Non-executive Director of Towngas China. During his 38-year career with Towngas, Ir Kwan has done much to provide safe and affordable gas to over 1.7 million households in Hong Kong and 12 million more in the Mainland. Under his leadership, Towngas is the winner of the Hang Seng Pearl River Delta Environmental Awards, and the Company of the Year Award of the UK Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers in both 1999 and 2006.
An internationally respected professional engineer, Ir Kwan is the first Chinese elected to be President of the UK Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers in 2000/01. He is Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Energy Institute, and the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers. He is a Past President of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), and was inducted into HKIE’s Hall of Fame in 2010. He was conferred Honorary Fellowship by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2011.
Ir Kwan also devoted himself to various community and public services. He was member of the Construction Industry Council, Engineers Registration Board, Air Pollution Control Appeal Board Panel, Gas Safety Advisory Committee, Standing Committee on Disciplined Services Salaries and Conditions of Service, Task Force on Manpower Development of the Retail Industry, as well as the Transport Advisory Committee. He is currently also an Independent Non-executive Director of the MTR Corporation.
Ir Kwan is a long-time veteran in VTC. He was instrumental in the setting up of the Chinese Culinary Training Institute and served as Council Member from 2008 to 2014, during which he contributed actively to the development of VTC with his professional wisdom. In 2014, Ir Kwan has brought precious opportunities to VTC students to participate in GASEX, a major biennial event of the gas industry in Asia Pacific. During his tenure as Council Member, he also served in Council’s functional committees, namely Estate Committee and Audit Committee. He is also formerly a member in the Board of Directors of the VTC School of Business and Information Systems, as well as in the Board of Directors of the VTC Enterprises Limited.
