Honorary Fellowships

Dr James J. LAM is an Orthopaedic Surgeon by profession. In the mid-1990s, he established the Shoulder Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Service at the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital. At the same time, he served as the Honorary Sports Medicine Consultant at the Hong Kong Sports Institute. Dr Lam has served as the Hong Kong Team Doctor at different International Games, including Paralympic Games, which laid the foundation for his future services in the community. Dr Lam was appointed as Justice of the Peace (JP) and awarded Bronze Bauhinia Star (BBS) in July 2011 and July 2017 respectively.
 

In addition to his medical practice, Dr Lam is an active promoter of sports, and encourages persons with impairment to participate in sports activities. He has been an International Paralympic Classifier since 1992. He was the Vice Chairman (2004-2013) and then the Chairman (2013-2021) of the Hong Kong Paralympic Committee & Sports Association for the Physically Disabled. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Sports Institute (2009-2015) and the HKSAR Sports Commission (2015-2021).
 

His involvement as a member (2006-2012), and later as the Vice-Chairman (2012-2018), of the Rehabilitation Advisory Committee (RAC) brought him closer to the VTC. During his Vice-Chairmanship of the RAC, he devoted a lot of attention to improving the various aspects concerning the ageing of persons with intellectual disabilities, as well as giving significant contributions to related fields of the VTC.
 

Dr Lam was appointed as the Vice-Chairman of the VTC Vocational Training Board for People with Disabilities in 2013 and took up the Chairmanship in 2019. He has been working closely with the VTC, the Government of the HKSAR and various stakeholders on the issue of relocating the Shine Skills Centre (Kwun Tong) to the temporary site and the subsequent relocation of the school premises back to Kwun Tong. Dr Lam has also provided invaluable advice on the proposal for implementing the enhanced integrated vocational and skills training services for the Shine Skills Centre (Shine) students. With extra funding from the Labour and Welfare Bureau, these services equipped the Shine's students with the necessary skills for adapting to the work environment, driving their work motivation and sustaining their continuous employment in the open market. Dr Lam seeks out every opportunity and works tirelessly to promote an inclusive society and encourage the employment of persons with impairment, especially Shine's graduates.
