Nurturing electrical engineers, supporting students to learn

Equipped with advanced technological and professional training facilities, the “CLP Power Engineering Laboratory” is established with CLP’s funding to nurture a new generation of power engineering talent with smart-grid and high-voltage knowhow to support Hong Kong’s transformation into a low-carbon smart city. The “CLP Award for VPET Students” is inaugurated for financially needy Higher Diploma students who are currently pursuing the related power engineering programmes. Aligned with the needs of Hong Kong’s development, the award nurtures professional talent for the local energy industry by supporting them to undergo VPET in order to boost their chances for upward mobility.

Supporting VTC’s establishment of the “CLP Power Engineering Laboratory”, Mr William Mocatta, Chairman of CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP), said:” We look forward to nurturing more talent in electrical engineering and smart grid technology as we build a greener Hong Kong.” VTC Chairman Mr Tony Tai said:” Our brand-new facility will benefit some 500 students studying VTC’s electrical engineering programmes every year and serve as a multi-purpose teaching and learning platform for both Vocational and Professional Education and Training (VPET) students and in-service practitioners.”

New generation of power engineering talent

Kyle Yip, a graduate of the Higher Diploma in Electrical Engineering programme at VTC has joined CLP as Engineer I, is responsible for smart grid development. He believes the new laboratory can help students master smart grid expertise and other new technologies to accelerate their career development.

Cheung Wing Ho, Chairman of The Federation of Hong Kong Electrical & Mechanical Industries Trade Unions, has been in the profession for many years. He pointed out: “In the past, only the power companies offered training to their employees to help them secure professional credentials for performing high-voltage engineering work. The Professional Diploma in Power Engineering programme launched by VTC has opened a new progression pathway for industry personnel to gain professional qualifications and career development opportunities.”

Besides setting up the “CLP Power Engineering Laboratory”, CLP has also introduced the “CLP Award for VPET Students”, lending financial support to talent grooming within the energy profession in synchrony with Hong Kong’s developments.

Focusing on studies to achieve good academic results

“CLP’s support allows me to quit my part-time work and focus on studies. Subsequently, my grade point average (GPA) score reached 3.5 in the previous semester!” So Nga Ying, a student of Higher Diploma in Environmental Engineering, who takes an interest in environmental protection, has always dreamt of alleviating the global warming problem.

Li Hui Yin, who studies for a Higher Diploma in Computer and Electronic Engineering, has a liking for electronic components and AI self-driving system since childhood. “My family finances quickly deteriorated after my father fell ill all of a sudden, exacerbated by the pandemic’s impact on his work. Fortunately, CLP has been on hand to provide me with financial assistance to tide over the difficulties.”

Ho Chun Hin, a Higher Diploma in Mechanical Engineering student, suffers from dyslexia, a learning disorder, which has affected his studies. “As I had to share a computer with my family members, I found it inconvenient for me to go online to attend classes and do homework. I used the award to purchase a Computer Aided Design software for regular practice.”

Besides offering scholarship, CLP also organises activities like online seminars and facility tours, while providing students with an internship programme to deepen their understanding of the profession.
