The Child Education Centre for Teaching and Learning (CECTL), part of the Department of Childcare, Elderly and Community Services (CECS) of the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE), a member institution of the Vocational Training Council (VTC), held the Kiddie-Family Moneyland – Achievement Ceremony cum Launching Ceremony for the Second Phase of Cross Generation Outreaching Educational Programme today (30 March). To promote early education on money management, IVE joins hands with the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) to launch the Kiddie-Family Moneyland education programme by setting up the parent-child financial management gallery and arranging teacher training and parental education activities, to educate children and families how to spend responsibly and wisely.

It is the first time the HKMA partners with the education sector to launch an early education programme on money management. The programme aims to promote the positive values and habits in managing money through all-round activities including kids’ experiential game, parents’ talk with a money management guide, teaching training series and implementation of school-based curriculum. Mr Darryl CHAN, Executive Director (Corporate Services) of the HKMA, said in the ceremony, “The HKMA has been collaborating with different stakeholders in organising educational activities to help children learn the correct money management concepts at an early age, and encourage secondary school and tertiary students to enhance their financial knowledge. All these aim at helping our next generation to build a strong foundation of skills in managing their personal finance at an early stage. With the proven teaching experience of the CECTL, the money management messages were successfully conveyed to every participant of the activities through interactive games, achieving the goal of ‘cross generation money management education’.”

To support the initiative, CECTL has established Hong Kong’s first parent-child financial management gallery inside the IVE(ST) campus. Consisted of four experiential zones, namely the work experience zone, the banking service experience zone, the spending experience zone and the caring experience zone, the gallery provides the children with the opportunity of role playing over ten different careers to learn about the relationship between work and wages, saving, and the importance of money management and budgeting. The programme also covers parental education, including money management talk and guide, as well as educating parents the smart tips of using banking services, and how to prepare a family budget and implant healthy money management concepts to their children through fun games.

Moreover, 1,600 students from CECS received professional training on the subject matter. Among these students, over forty of them have already acquired the skills of being “children money management trainers”, applying games to talk about money management with young children and parents.

Principal of IVE (Sha Tin) and Academic Director of CECS Discipline Dr Lillian WONG said, “As an institute that promotes quality learning and teaching, we collaborate with different partners to incorporate the important social values into children’s early education experience through various initiatives. From the first phase of the programme, we have learnt so much about children’s common misconceptions about money and spending. We hope we can help develop proper financial concepts among the children and their families against the unhealthy social trend of over-consumption and irresponsible borrowing.”

Twenty kindergartens have already completed the programme in the first phase. In the second phase, the programme is going to expand to cover thirty more kindergartens. It is expected to benefit a total of 9,000 children and parents upon completion of the second phase. The parent-child financial management gallery is only open to the participating schools currently, but CECTL is considering to open it to the public so that more families can be benefitted.

More than 300 guests, including teachers, students and parents from the 50 participating kindergartens, enjoyed the drama in the ceremony about money management devised by the students of CECS and kindergarten teachers and students. Afterwards, the guests took part in a series of money management experiential activities, including journey to kids’ mock-up bank, games and exhibition, art and craft making, storybook reading and drama, to learn the tips of smart money management.
