600 students gather at VTC-ITE International Student Seminar 2019 exploring ways to shape future smart cities
The Vocational Training Council (VTC) has partnered with the Institute of Technical Education Singapore to present the four-day VTC-ITE International Student Seminar 2019 (ISS) from 17 June until 20 June. The Seminar themed “A Smarter Generation for 2020+” has gathered around 600 students from Singapore, the UK, Shenzhen and Hong Kong to explore how innovations and technology can build a better place for tomorrow.
The ISS Opening Ceremony was held yesterday (17 June), VTC Chairman Dr Roy CHUNG said, “Smart city development is high on the government’s agenda with Hong Kong’s Smart City Blueprint and Singapore’s Smart Nation Initiative in the pipeline in the two cities. It is timely to have the seminar theme on ‘A Smarter Generation for 2020+’, exploring ways to support better living with smart technologies and smart talent.” He also said that co-creation efforts by VTC and ITE students were further encouraged to train their digital skills, design thinking and collaboration skills this year.
Leading the Singapore delegation, ITE Chairman Bob TAN encouraged ITE students to get to know their fellow counterparts in Hong Kong and build friendship. He pointed out that the international student seminar provided great opportunities for students to extend the teamwork spirit beyond Singapore to Hong Kong and learn perseverance from each other.
In addition to exploring ways of enabling smart living, environment and economy with emerging technologies, participating students will also showcase their innovative ideas including the first joint project of VTC and ITE students. The co-creation project is conceived out of the experience of elderly travellers. Making good use of mixed reality (MR) technology, the project team developed an interactive game which allows seniors to experience the latest technology-enhanced facilities and services in modern airports. This well demonstrates the design thinking and digital skills of the students.
The organiser will also make available exhibitions of innovative solutions developed by students. One example is AI Facial Analytic Engine for Smart Retailing and Advertising developed by IVE students of Higher Diploma in Data Science and Analytics. Another highlight is “the Rice Donor”, which is a mobile app, developed by students of Higher Diploma in Culinary Arts jointly offered by the International Culinary Institute (ICI) and the Chinese Culinary Institute (CCI) to reduce food waste. There is also the board game developed by students of the Childcare, Elderly and Community Services Discipline for the elderly who suffer from dementia.
Meanwhile distinguished industry personalities from Hong Kong and Singapore have been invited to share how technologies can be used in different industries. Chief Operating Officer of Farm66 Billy LAM will talk about the latest technology for sustainable farming. President of International Unmanned Aircraft Systems Association Rickson CHOW and Managing Partner of Limestone Network from Singapore Eddie LEE will show how drones and blockchain technology can be used in creating a smart city.
