The AI Robo Dog showcased at the VTC Booth is a collaboration between students of IVE’s Higher Diploma programmes in Mechanical Engineering and Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics. Together, they have applied their strong know how in AI, robotic programming and analytics to enhance the functions of a robotic dog developed by industry.

The exhibit “META 4D Dome Robot” is an immersive CAVE system game designed and developed by two graduates of IVE’s Higher Diploma in Games and Animation programme. Unlike typical games where developers use programming to control the motions of characters, the “Four-legged Robot” of this game is powered by AI and equipped with an “AI brain” so that during a battle, the robot can automatically adjust its walking postures, directions and attack strategies.

The VTC Booth showcases two contemporary cheongsams designed by a graduate of HKDI’s Higher Diploma in Fashion Image Design programme, a graduate pursuing a design-related top-up degree programme offered by the School for Higher and Professional Education (SHAPE) in collaboration with an overseas university and a student of THEi’s Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Fashion Design programme. Their designs offer new interpretations of traditional aesthetics.

The Vocational Training Council (VTC) is taking part in the four-day Education & Careers Expo 2023 which runs from today until 5 February at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai. Themed “VPET – Skilling Talent for the Future”, the VTC Booth arrays innovative and applied technological projects designed and developed by VTC teachers and students to showcase the fruitful outcomes of Vocational and Professional Education and Training (VPET). Officiating at the Expo’s opening ceremony today, HKSAR Secretary for Education Dr CHOI Yuk-lin toured the VTC Booth and chatted with teachers and students to learn more about the professional development opportunities on offer at the VTC and the learning outcomes of VTC students.

Located near the entrance of Hall 1E, the VTC Booth welcomes members of the public to experience free of charge various try-a-skill activities. Interested Secondary 6 students can apply for programmes of their choice on site. One of the projects on display is a collaboration between Higher Diploma students of the Mechanical Engineering, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics programmes at Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE). Together, they have enhanced the functions of the industry-developed AI Robo Dog, making good use of their know-how in AI, robotic programming and analytics. Their enhanced dog-like robot can detect users’ head motions and gestures and move around accordingly. The team plan to further improve their Robotic Dog by, for example, adding robotic arms and autonomous delivery functions that can help users in their everyday lives. They look forward to merging it with smart manufacturing technologies to help promote Hong Kong’s smart city development and enhance citizens’ quality of life.

The META 4D Dome Robot, another exhibit, is an immersive CAVE system game designed and developed by two graduates of IVE’s Higher Diploma in Games and Animation programme. Unlike typical games where developers use programming to control the motions of characters, the “Four-legged Robot” character of this game is powered by AI and equipped with an “AI brain”. During the battle, the robot will mimic the motions and postures of the players and automatically adjust its own walking postures, directions and attack strategies accordingly. It can learn and bolster the players’ techniques of its own accord, adding fun to the game and raising the level of difficulty. In addition to developing the game, the team utilised what they have learnt from IVE including computer animation production, character design and animation, as well as digital composition and rendering techniques, to create a barren landscape of a mine site at war as the game background and design different characters.

The VTC Booth also showcases two contemporary cheongsams designed by a graduate of the Higher Diploma in Fashion Image Design programme at Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) and a graduate pursuing a design-related top-up degree programme offered by the School for Higher and Professional Education (SHAPE), also a VTC member institution, in collaboration with an overseas university. One piece adopts military style, fusing Chinese advertising posters and collage patterns. The other is made of rouge velvet with asymmetric totems. Both offer new interpretations of traditional aesthetics. Visitors can also watch a video on the spot to view a cheongsam exhibition curated by HKDI’s Fashion Archive titled “An Alluring Inheritance of Beauty: Chinese Cheongsam”, which presents works crafted over a hundred years.

Concurrently, VTC will organise different talks covering topics like “Jointly Nurturing the New Generation of IT Talents”, “Nurturing Future Engineering Talents”, “New Dining Experience: Spoon Feeding with Your Favour” and “Power of Play – We Park” to facilitate further studies and career planning. Information about the diverse progression pathways from Diploma to Degree levels at VTC will be made available for candidates of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE) and their parents. VTC representatives will also provide advisory service for further studies covering VTC programmes at different levels, leading to the awards of Bachelor’s Degree, Higher Diploma, Diploma of Foundation Studies, Diploma of Vocational Education or Diploma. Secondary 6 students can apply for their preferred programmes on site via the VTC S6 Admission Portal.

During the Expo, there will be skills demonstrations to let visitors know more about VTC programmes. Skills demonstrations by staff and students from the Hotel and Tourism Institute (HTI), the Chinese Culinary Institute (CCI) and the International Culinary Institute (ICI) include noodle pulling, multisensory mixology, carnival hand painting, gastronomic plating and fondant flowers making.
