Tertiary dream fulfilled in becoming a sports management professional

With the generosity of Rotary International District 3450, the “Rotary Hong Kong Vocational Scholarship” has been established to provide financial assistance for VTC needy students, who care for the community and show leadership potential, to progress from Diploma of Foundation Studies to Higher Diploma and bachelor degree programmes, and nurture aspiring vocational and professional talent with moral character and a positive attitude for contributing to the industries and society.

Billy Cheung’s family is less than affluent but he studied hard towards realising his dreams. He was awarded the “Rotary Hong Kong Vocational Scholarship” that supported his completion of a Diploma of Foundation Studies and Higher Diploma Programme. Continuing to claim the scholarship award this year, he has been admitted to the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi) to pursue a Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Sports and Recreation Management programme.

Navigating a professional path

Besides giving him great encouragement, the scholarship has relieved Billy of the financial burden of tuition fees, enabling him to devote himself wholeheartedly to studies and steering him towards vocational and professional development. Profoundly interested in the curriculum’s content, he said: “The programme has given me a deep understanding about the functions and characteristics of every muscle and bone in the human anatomy, along with knowledge of sports trauma, to lay a foundation for my career development in this profession.”

Promoting sports safety

Billy was the captain of his secondary school’s athletic team. Noting the remarkable performance of the Hong Kong delegation in the Tokyo Olympics last year, which fueled a sports fever among the local population, he hopes to join a sports and recreation management career after graduation to promote sports knowledge and let the public enjoy sporting activities safely.
