Backing further education, promoting research on traditional Chinese medicine

Wu Jieh Yee Charitable Foundation has supported VTC to develop Vocational and Professional Education and Training (VPET) in the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) since 2013, including the establishment of “Wu Jieh Yee Bursary” to help financially needy students to continue their studies. Subsequently, it has supported the teaching and research needs of the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Chinese Medicinal Pharmacy launched by THEi and financed the development of the Chinese medicine pharmacy laboratory “Herbal Heritage Hub” at the Tsing Yi campus, which combines with the installation of advanced technology and training facilities and promotion of TCM innovation research to help nurture TCM talent. In the 2020/21 academic year, the Foundation set up the “Wu Ho Loo Ning Scholarship” to support financially needy Diploma of Vocational Baccalaureate (DVB) students of Youth College (International) to articulate to the four-year, self-financed degree studies in THEi to progress upwards along the VPET articulation pathway and drive their professional development.

Evans Pang, an engineering graduate from Youth College (International), is awarded with the inaugural “Wu Ho Loo Ning Scholarship” enabling him to pursue a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Surveying at the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi).

A suitable personal choice

Both his parents passed away from illness when he was in secondary school. The experience made him more mature than most other students of his age and capable of developing a mind of his own. “My secondary school results were less than satisfactory. Having discussed with my teachers and social worker and gathered the relevant information, I decided to switch to learning more practical subjects at Youth College.” After making the switch, he felt as though he could see light at the end of the tunnel. His lecturers had taken pains to explain clearly the practical use of every skill and procedure taught, which made it easier for him to grasp industry knowledge.

Demonstrating curriculum value

He feels thankful for the scholarship awarded to him under the Wu Jieh Yee Charitable Foundation as it has relieved his financial burden. “Being able to meet my learning and daily expenses offers me greater scope for development. I hope I can become a role model for my younger college mates, testifying how the course curriculum could open up other avenues.” Evans is also learning English intensively to prepare for an overseas education in the future, hoping that it will enrich his exposure to architectural styles and cultures across various lands.

Besides helping financially needy students by awarding them scholarship and bursary, the Wu Jieh Yee Charitable Foundation has also offered generous funding for the establishment of the new Chinese medicine pharmacy laboratory “Herbal Heritage Hub” at THEi Tsing Yi campus as a base for traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) research.

Promoting TCM innovations

Recent years have witnessed how the TCM system in Hong Kong has improved incrementally with the population’s huge demand for TCM treatments. At the same time, the government is striving to promote TCM developments and elevate the sector’s overall standards. Hence, the establishment of “Herbal Heritage Hub” is considered timely. This Chinese medicine pharmacy laboratory is equipped with advanced technological and professional training facilities to support TCM research, holding promises for the research and development of professional technologies in Chinese medicine innovation.

Cradle for nurturing TCM talent

The laboratory has been established just in time to support the launch of the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Chinese Medicinal Pharmacy programme. The new equipment is combined with a virtual reality medicine dispensing system to inject modern elements into TCM, thereby providing students with more technology-aided learning opportunities, helping them to showcase their strengths and supporting talent grooming in the industry.
