Memory Forest (Kinetic version), co-developed by IVE HealthTech Centre and the healthcare industry, provides training for users to enhance physical coordination and cognitive ability.

The Vocational Training Council (VTC) is going to participate in the four-day Education & Careers Expo (6 - 9 February) to be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai, providing one-stop information for young people and in-service personnel on the progression pathways and professional development options available to them through vocational and professional education and training (VPET). Interested Secondary 6 students can apply for the programmes on the spot. In addition, a strong line-up of attractions will be on offer, including try-a-skill activities and a visual merchandising skills competition. Admission is free.

Themed “Skills Change Lives” this year, the VTC Booth is located near the entrance of Hall 1E. It has been adapted from a conceptual design by students pursuing the Higher Diploma in Event and Exhibition Design programme, a testimony to both the theoretical and application capabilities of VTC students.

Also on display will be winning projects and innovative technology products developed by students and teachers which show how VTC promotes technology-enhanced learning for nurturing skilled talent in the new era.

One of the exhibits, the Smart Home Control System, is the brainchild of graduates of the Higher Diploma in Computer and Electronic Engineering programme of the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE), a member institution of the VTC. The system leverages artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning technologies. It allows users to control home appliances by using arm movements. It also features a built-in motion detection function which can be used to detect falls of occupants and send out alerts. Another showcase, Memory Forest (Kinetic version), co-developed by IVE HealthTech Centre and the healthcare industry, features a multimedia application incorporating scientific research and game elements, which provides physical coordination and cognitive training for people with dementia and coordination difficulties.

The use of technology in teaching is a global trend. The VTC Booth will also display its technology-enhanced teaching facilities like the Virtual Reality (VR) Anatomy Learning System used by the IVE Applied Science Discipline to present 3D images of human body composition. It can display several anatomy systems at the same time and thus help IVE students taking healthcare programmes grasp the concepts of human anatomy.

To increase public awareness for skills application, the VTC will also mount the “WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition – Visual Merchandising” on site between 6 and 7 February. Members of the public are welcome to watch the contests where competitors will be required to design and create a unique window display with assigned materials and tools within two days. The contestants will be tested for their design knowledge, creativity and artisanal skills. Winners may be selected to represent Hong Kong in the Guangzhou/Hong Kong/Macao/Chengdu (GHMC) Youth Skills Competition to be held in Chengdu this year, as well as in next year’s WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai.

At the Expo, VTC representatives will hold seminars to let audience know more about the multiple progression pathways available at the VTC. Visitors can also get more information about the different programmes offered by VTC member institutions, ranging from Diploma to Diploma of Vocational Education, Diploma of Foundation Studies, Higher Diploma to Degree programmes. Secondary 6 students can apply for these programmes on the spot through the VTC Web-based Admissions.

A Culinary Theme Day with demonstration of Asian and Chinese dishes will be held on 8 February. Moreover, an array of exciting performances and demonstrations such as make-up, hair styling, rope skipping, culinary and cocktail mixing will be showcased on site. Visitors can also try the teaching demonstration VR games. During the weekend (8 - 9 February), there will be workshops on such topics as making neon signs, bluetooth car, solar cars and upcycled denim accessories.
