In 2012/13, about 3,400 apprentices in over 130 trades
received training to become qualified skilled workers under
the Apprenticeship Scheme. Besides, a traineeship scheme
for service industries was launched. The scheme was piloted
in the Beauty Care and Hairdressing industries and over
200 trainees enrolled during the year. Planning is under
way to extend the scheme to other trades such as retail,
elderly care services and food and beverage services, which
will support young people to develop their career through
practical on-the-job training complemented with vocational
education.
In parallel, the Institute of Professional Education And
Knowledge (PEAK) provides a wide range of quality in-service
training services for working people in various industries
including banking, finance, insurance and information
technology. Professional certificate courses are offered to
in-service personnel of the catering industry through the
VTC Tao Miao Institute. Training and consultancy services
are also provided to the Government and corporations
which include services for supporting the mandatory
building inspection scheme, School-based Teacher Training
Programme and other initiatives.
New Setup Facilitating Industry Development
During the year, the VTC established the Plastic Materials
Resources Centre in collaboration with the Federation of
Hong Kong Industries. Acting as a central repository for
plastic materials, the centre helps the development of
the plastics industry, especially for small and medium
enterprises in facing keen competition and rapid changes in
the consumer market.
In view of the rapid development of the catering industry, the
International Culinary Institute will be established in 2016
to train professional manpower in international cuisines.
The Institute will offer a wide spectrum of programmes,
leading to certificate, diploma, professional diploma, higher
diploma, as well as degree qualifications to be developed in
collaboration with THEi for youth and in-service practitioners.
To pave the way for future collaborations, several exchanges
with overseas culinary institutions have been lined up
in order to establish a network of experts in various
international cuisines.
