Professional Recognition

The programme is recognised by:

the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) as satisfying the academic requirements for its Associate Membership;
the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department of the HKSAR Government as fulfilling the academic requirements for registration as Grade B Electrical Worker. (To fulfill the working experience requirements for Grade B Registered Electrical Worker, graduates should be employed as an electrical worker for at least five years, at least two years of which included practical experience in electrical work.)

Remarks

Students are required to follow the programme arrangements stipulated by IVE, on average 1 day and 1 - 2 evenings per week, normally 3 semesters per academic year.

Diploma of Yi Jin / Diploma of Applied Education with successful completion of Mathematics Plus; OR
Relevant and substantial work experience and/or prior qualification(s) obtained in or outside Hong Kong (e.g. assessed through recognition of prior learning and credit accumulation and transfer), with demonstrated ability to undertake sub-degree education; OR

*Holders of HKDSE, should possess HKDSE Mathematics (Compulsory Part) / Mathematics Extended Part (Module 1 or Module 2) at Level 2 or above.

Holders of VTC Foundation Diploma (Level 3) / Diploma of Foundation Studies / VTC Diploma in Vocational Education / Diploma of Vocational Education / Yi Jin Diploma / Diploma Yi Jin / Diploma of Applied Education without successful completion of the relevant optional Mathematics module, should possess HKDSE Mathematics / Mathematics Extended Part (Module 1 or Module 2) at Level 2 or above.
Applicants can use HKDSE Applied Learning (ApL) subjects (except ApL Chinese) for admission purpose. An "Attained", "Attained with Distinction (I)" and "Attained with Distinction (II)" in an ApL subject (Category B subjects) are regarded as equivalent to an HKDSE subject at "Level 2", "Level 3" and "Level 4" respectively for admission purpose.
For 2024 HKDSE and before, a "Grade D or E" and a "Grade C or above" in an HKDSE Other Language subject (Category C subjects) are regarded as equivalent to an HKDSE subject at "Level 2" and "Level 3" respectively. From 2025 HKDSE onwards, Language Proficiency Level A2 or above in French / German / Spanish, N3 or above in Japanese and TOPIK II: Grade 3 or above in Korean are also recognised as one of the five HKDSE subjects in fulfilling the general entrance requirement. Recognition of Urdu Language subject in 2026 HKDSE Other Language subject (Category C subjects) will be announced later. For details, please click here. One Other Language subject can be counted for admission purpose.
An "Attained" in HKDSE Citizenship and Social Development is regarded as equivalent to an HKDSE subject at "Level 2" for admission purpose.
If one of the five HKDSE subjects is Citizenship and Social Development, the general entrance requirement would become "Attained" for Citizenship and Social Development and Level 2 or above in four other HKDSE subjects including Chinese Language and English Language. Besides, Level 2 or above in Mathematics Extended Part (Module 1 or Module 2) is also recognised as one of the five HKDSE subjects in fulfilling the general entrance requirement. If applicants have taken both Module 1 and Module 2, either one of the modules (with a higher level) will be counted for admission purpose.
HKCEE English Language taken in 2006 or before should have attained Grade E or above (Syllabus B) / Grade C or above (Syllabus A).
Applicable to holders of Diploma in Vocational Education / Diploma of Vocational Education (DVE) (students admitted to DVE in AY2017/18 or before are required to complete prescribed further studies modules).
Upon completion of the Diploma of Vocational Baccalaureate (DVB) programmes, students can progress to Higher Diploma programmes in VTC, subject to their BTEC and IGCSE results.
Applications with work experience and/or prior qualification(s) submitted will be assessed individually by the departments concerned.
Applicant should be employed in the field of Electrical Engineering or relevant trade.

Articulation / Employment

Articulation

Graduates may apply for admission to the relevant BEng (Hons) programmes offered by the local universities. Upon admission to relevant degree programme, graduates may apply for credit exemption. The level of exemption will be considered on individual basis.

Higher Diploma is recognised by most overseas universities. Special offers are given by RMIT University, Australia (2-year full-time and 8-semester PT BEng programme studying in HK in collaboration with SHAPE).

Career Prospects

Graduates may be employed as assistant engineers, technicians, supervisors, technical sales engineers. Most of them work in the areas of electrical services, electrical installation, power systems, lighting systems, E&M operation & maintenance, electrical & electronic servicing.

Elective module offered in HW campus only.

Elective module offered in TY campus only (If a PTD student chooses the elective module(s) offered in TY campus, then he/she will normally be arranged to study in the evening class at TY campus. However, whether the class can be successfully formed or not, it will depend on the number of applicants.)

This module is divided into two parts and offered in Semester 8 and 9 respectively.

Applicant may apply for exemption of the module if either he or she has full-time employment in relevant trade or is competent with his/her work.

All students will be required to take and pass all of the Whole Person Development modules before graduation. Students possessing two-year full-time work experience can apply for module exemption which is subject to passing the related assessment. Please click here for details.

Remarks

In addition to tuition fees, students of Higher Diploma programmes will be required to pay the fee for the study packages of Chinese & Putonghua modules.
Some students may be required to study bridging modules or enhancement programmes to better support their study; or to attend additional training and industrial attachment, for which separate fees will be charged.
Registered Apprentices applied through "Office of the Director of Apprenticeship" will be informed of the tuition fee separately.
