Basic Information

Interior designers work to create harmonious, practical and aesthetically pleasing environments and spaces. During the programme, students learn how to achieve this by understanding the relationship between historical, social, cultural, economic, and technical considerations with successful designs. They also learn how to research and develop and present creative ideas. Students will be equipped with professional and technical design skills through individual and team projects. Graduates will possess confidence, technical competence, presentation skills and project management skills to work in a professional design studio.

The programme is designed with an emphasis on generic, language and communication training, whole-person development and workplace experience to better prepare students for further studies and employment after graduation.

Professional Recognition

Students are eligible to apply for student membership of the Hong Kong Designers Association (HKDA) and the Hong Kong Interior Design Association (HKIDA).

Graduates may articulate to the Degree programmes offered by Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi):

Graduates may pursue relevant Degrees locally or overseas. They are eligible to apply for admission to the top-up Degree programme offered by the following university in collaboration with the School for Higher and Professional Education (SHAPE):

Upon admission to relevant Degree programmes, graduates may apply for credit exemption. The level of exemption will be considered on an individual basis.

Career Prospects
Graduates may be employed in small or large-scale architectural and interior design firms in corporate, residential, hospitality, retail, food and beverage, and leisure developments, etc. Graduates may also work for industries related to built environment design.

Remarks
  1. The study duration of Higher Diploma programmes is normally 2 years. The tuition fee is payable in two installments each year.
  2. In addition to tuition fees, students will be required to pay other fees, such as caution money and students’ union annual fees. Students of Higher Diploma programmes will be required to pay the study package fees for Chinese & Putonghua modules.
  3. Some students may be required to study bridging modules or enhancement programmes to support their study; or to attend additional training, industrial attachments, public examinations for which separate fees will be charged.
  4. Tuition fees are subject to annual review. The tuition fee levels for 2nd Year will be reviewed subject to inflationary adjustments and other relevant factors.

32nd Asia Pacific Interior Design Awards 2024

HKDI showcased its design expertise at the 32nd Asia Pacific Interior Design Awards 2024. Kong Ming Kin, a student in the Higher Diploma in Interior Design programme, won the Gold award in the Student Design category for his project "The Secret Realm", standing out among over 160 entries from 7 countries. Interior Design students enter this competition annually and have received achieved remarkable results, including Gold awards in both 2024 and 2023, as well as Sliver and Bronze awards in 2023.

IFI DDA Design Distinction Awards and Asia Pacific Interior Design Awards

IFI DDA Design Distinction Awards and Asia Pacific Interior Design Awards

HKDI interior design graduate Austin Chan received the Bronze award in the student category at the 2024 IFI Design Distinction Awards. This recognition follows his previous success at the 31st Asia Pacific Interior Design Awards 2023, where he also won the Bronze award for his design project "Oasis".
