A Proud History of Excellence
The history of the Vocational Training Council (VTC) can be
traced back to 1936 when the first technical college, the
predecessor of Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education
(Morrison Hill), opened its doors to offer technical training
courses.
In the early 1980s, the Government led a determined effort
to establish a statutory body to nurture a quality workforce
for the industries. The VTC was thus officially established
under the Vocational
Training Council Ordinance enacted
in 1982. Growing from a group of five technical institutes
with 35,000 students to a fully-fledged organisation of 13
member institutions, the VTC is now the largest vocational
education and training (VET) provider in Hong Kong, providing
valuable credentials for over a quarter of a million students
annually.
Since its inception, the VTC has been serving as a cradle for
nurturing pillars of society. Throughout its development, the
VTC has been firmly anchored to the community — building
strong ties with all sectors of industry and commerce to
provide them with services tailored to their needs. Over the
years, the VTC has cultivated generations of professionals in
various sectors through the provision of high quality VET that
prepares students from diverse backgrounds to contribute
and serve as backbone of today’s complex and globalised
economy.
With its ability to nurture all-round talent and a multifaceted
capacity for knowledge transfer to the local economy,
supporting local networks and linking them with global ones,
the VTC has made a vital contribution to the success and
sustainable development of Hong Kong.
