Basic Information

The programme aims to equip students with the professional knowledge and skills to design, propose solutions or make recommendation in the fields of aircraft maintenance and aircraft engineering. Modules specialised in aircraft engineering such as mechanics of flight, propeller, aircraft system design, gas turbine engine, flight stability and automatic control will be the emphases of the programme. Moreover, the programme prepares students to take the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department HKAR-66 Cat. B1.1 Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Basic Licence Examination. The programme covers a broad range of professional knowledge including safety, regulations, societal and environmental considerations. It also covers the provision of general education and work-integrated learning. Graduates will be professionally competent in the aircraft industry.

Professional Recognition

The programme has been approved by the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department (HKCAD) as a HKAR66 Cat. B1.1 Basic License Training Course. That means graduates who accumulate around 1,100 hours of aircraft maintenance practical training and pass all the HKAR-66 Cat. B1.1 knowledge examinations and practical assessments are eligible to award the HKAR-147 Certificate of Recognition (CoR). With this CoR, graduates only need 2 years of relevant work experience to apply for the HKAR-66 Cat B1.1 Aircraft Maintenance License.
Remarks
  1. Core modules would be conducted at THEi (Tsing Yi) and some General Education (GE) modules at other campuses.
  2. Admission score in 2024 refers to score of the best 5 HKDSE subjects, including Chinese Language, English Language, Mathematics, Citizenship and Social Development, and one elective subject of admitted students in 2024. For reference only. (Scoring scale: 5** = 7 points; 5* = 6 points; 5 = 5 points: 4 = 4 points; 3 = 3 points; 2 = 2 points; 1 = 1 point).
Notes
  1. Students may be required to attend classes on other VTC campuses. VTC reserves the right to cancel any programme, revise programme title, content or change the offering institute(s) / campus(es) / class venue(s) if circumstances so warrant.
  2. Students who opt for the Certificate of Recognition for the HKAR-147 Cat. B1.1 Aircraft Maintenance Licence should fulfill the practical training requirement (Graduates from the Higher Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering should also meet the attendance requirements stipulated by HKAR-66). They are required to accumulate about 1,100 hours of practical training / industrial attachment as arranged by THEi, at an extra fee. (For reference, around HK$20,000 would be required for each academic year and the actual fee is subject to change.)

Entrance Requirements

  • HKDSE

  • Equivalent*
Remarks
*Upon completion of the Diploma of Vocational Baccalaureate (DVB) programmes, students can progress to Degree programmes in VTC, subject to their BTEC and IGCSE results.
  1. These are the entrance requirements of Year 1 entry.
  2. A "Grade D or E" and a "Grade C or above" in an HKDSE Other Language subject (Category C subjects) are regarded as equivalent to an HKDSE subject at "Level 2" and "Level 3" respectively (for 2024 HKDSE and before). One Other Language subject can be counted for admission purpose. Recognition of Other Language subject (Category C subjects) in 2025 HKDSE will be announced later.
  3. An "Attained", "Attained with Distinction (I)" and "Attained with Distinction (II)" in an HKDSE Applied Learning (ApL) subject (Category B subjects) are regarded as equivalent to an HKDSE subject at "Level 2", "Level 3" and "Level 4" respectively, and a maximum of two ApL subjects (excluding ApL(C)) can be counted for admission purpose.  The results of relevant ApL subjects will be considered in the application for Degree programmes. Relevant ApL subject include: Aviation Studies.
  4. An “Attained” in HKDSE Citizenship and Social Development is regarded as equivalent to an HKDSE subject at “Level 2” for admission purpose.
  5. HKDSE Liberal Studies at Level 2 or above will be recognised for meeting the subject requirement of Citizenship and Social Development.

Articulation / Employment

Articulation
Graduates are able to articulate to Master’s programmes in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering and aviation management.
