1 March 2018

The Vocational Training Council (VTC) welcomes the measures as outlined in the Financial Secretary‘s 2018-19 Budget Speech which will provide support in vocational and professional education and training (VPET).

Apart from resources to be provided for regularisation of the VTC Earn & Learn Scheme launched in 2014/15 academic year to provide quality and diversified VPET for young people, the budget plan also proposed the allocation of $2.5 billion for launching the eighth round of Matching Grant Scheme to help publicly-funded post-secondary institutions, VTC included, tap more funding sources and improve the quality of education. More so, the Government will raise the subsidy ceiling of the Continuing Education Fund (CEF) to encourage members of the public to pursue self-enhancement.

VTC Chairman Dr Roy CHUNG remarked, “The measures unveiled in the Budget attended to the development needs of both pre-employment youth and adult learners. The support on VTC’s Earn and Learn Scheme is a vote of confidence to the dual-track learning system which integrates structured classroom learning with on-the-job training. The scheme offered quality VPET to young people and trained new blood for the development of industry. Over 3,000 youths have since benefitted from the scheme.”
