Basic Information

The programme aims to provide students with a Degree qualification in Chinese Medicinal Pharmacy (CMP) in order to support the manpower needs of the CMP industry. Its key objective is to provide students with an integrated CMP education and training so that they can cope with the complex and challenging requirements of the CMP industry. The programme will equip students with a solid foundation of both traditional and scientific knowledge, and practical skills and techniques to undertake professional CMP practices. It will also cultivate students’ analytical skills and critical thinking to enable them to function effectively as supervisors and managers as they progress in their careers.

Professional Recognition

  • Graduates of the programme may be nominated as responsible persons or deputies for the supervision of the manufacturing process of proprietary Chinese medicines (section 132(1)(b) of Cap. 549) or as responsible persons or deputies for the supervision of the dispensing of Chinese herbal medicines (section 114(2)(b) of Cap. 549) after accumulating six months of relevant practical experience.
  • Graduates of the programme are eligible to apply for membership of the Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Pharmacists Association.

  1. Core modules would be conducted at THEi (Chai Wan) and some General Education (GE) modules at other campuses.

*Upon completion of the Diploma of Vocational Baccalaureate (DVB) programmes, students can progress to Degree programmes in VTC, subject to their BTEC and IGCSE results.
  1. These are the entrance requirements of Year 1 entry.
  2. A "Grade D or E" and a "Grade C or above" in an HKDSE Other Language subject (Category C subjects) are regarded as equivalent to an HKDSE subject at "Level 2" and "Level 3" respectively (for 2024 HKDSE and before). One Other Language subject can be counted for admission purpose. Recognition of Other Language subject (Category C subjects) in 2025 HKDSE will be announced later.
  3. An "Attained", "Attained with Distinction (I)" and "Attained with Distinction (II)" in an HKDSE Applied Learning (ApL) subject (Category B subjects) are regarded as equivalent to an HKDSE subject at "Level 2", "Level 3" and "Level 4" respectively, and a maximum of two ApL subjects (excluding ApL(C)) can be counted for admission purpose. The results of relevant ApL subjects will be considered in the application for Degree programmes. Relevant ApL subjects include: Foundation in Chinese Medicine, Health Care Practice, Medical Laboratory Science.
  4. An “Attained” in Citizenship and Social Development is regarded as equivalent to an HKDSE subject at “Level 2” for admission purpose.
  5. HKDSE Liberal Studies at Level 2 or above will be recognised for meeting the subject requirement of Citizenship and Social Development.

Articulation / Employment

Articulation
The programme provides a solid foundation in academic competence and research capability for students aspiring for further studies. Graduates are eligible to enroll in a taught Master level or to register for research post-graduate Degree programmes, such as Master of Science in Chinese Medicines at HKU, MPhil in Chinese Medicine at CUHK, Master of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Chinese Medicine at HKBU. Many Chinese Medicine institutions in Mainland China also offer Chinese Medicine post-graduate programmes.
Career Prospects
Graduates may be employed in different technical and management post in CM pharm industry, such as CM pharmacists in clinics, professional QA or QC in pharmaceutical manufactures, officers of testing or authentication, proprietary Chinese medicine (pCm) registration officers, etc. When the graduates accumulate sufficient experience and professional qualifications, they can be promoted to management positions, such as senior CM pharmacists, pharmaceutical production or quality control department managers, testing or authentication officers, technical advisers or technical managers, scientific officers (Chinese medicine), etc.
With the continuing trend of demanding of Chinese medicine in Hong Kong, the HKSAR Government has promoted the development of CM Pharm, including the establishment of CM hospitals and Government Chinese Medicines Testing Institute, promoting GMP for manufacture of pCm and standardisation of Chinese Materia Medica. The demand of CM Pharm professionals is very strong. Therefore, the CM industries not only provide graduates with lots of placements and job opportunities to this programme, but also establish various professional natures so as to benefit to graduates’ career path and provides the opportunities of upward mobility in their career.

Remarks
  1. The study duration of Degree programmes is normally 4 years. The tuition fees of Degree programmes are charged according to the number of credit points taken during a semester. Students have to complete at least 120 to 132 credit points for graduation.
  2. In addition to tuition fees, students will be required to pay other fees, such as caution money, students’ union entrance fees and annual fee.
  3. Depending on the requirements of individual programmes, students may be required to attend additional training / industrial attachments, for which separate fees will be charged.
