Shun Hing Group International Academic Exchange Scholarships provide financial support for students pursuing Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi) degree programmes as well as higher diploma programmes at VTC to join semester-long academic exchange or internship programmes abroad, with a view of enriching their learning experiences and widening their horizons.
 
Jade Hung, a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Product Design student, received support from Shun Hing Group to join the “Designful Innovation for One Billion People” exchange programme at Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences in Netherlands and create design ideas to better the daily life of humanity. 

Pondering the integration of design and technology

Jade said: “Design ideas are entirely a matter of individual exploration. When I visited a museum in Rotterdam, I saw how the designers created their works with the concept of environmental protection, like planting a tree serving as a piece of furniture. I thought to myself why don’t we use locally available materials and transform wastes like kitchen leftovers, tree leaves and cigarette butts into daily products such as stationery and mobile phone covers through 3D printing technology?”    

“This trip let me reflect on the benefits of technology application. For example, I visited Gaudí’s Casa Batlló on an AR guided tour. My classmates from Netherlands were studying how medical diagnosis could be conducted remotely on mobile phones using face recognition technology. Design work is not limited to design only. To promote my idea of upcycling waste into useful materials, I have developed an app, with an incentive scheme added to increase the level of public participation.”
