Connecting the Dots
VPET is aimed at equipping people
with the practical knowledge, skills and
competencies they need to succeed in
today’s challenging world. It is a powerful
tool for change and a backbone of social
and economic growth. We are encouraged
to see its importance gaining steadily
increased recognition, with the HKSAR
Government having stepped up its efforts
to raise the status and quality of VPET.
By providing high-quality programmes and
realising the untapped values of VPET, we
are connecting the dots and empowering
our students through skills.
A Positive Push for VPET
In 2015, the Government’s Task
Force on Promotion of Vocational
Education issued a report making
27 recommendations, including the
rebranding of vocational education and
training to VPET for education up to
degree level, and an extension of the
VTC Earn & Learn Scheme.
These recommendations align perfectly
with the VTC’s third eight-year strategic
plan, which covers the period from
2015/16 to 2022/23 and will help
the Council scale new heights in the
implementation of VPET.
It was equally encouraging that all of
the Task Force’s recommendations were
endorsed in the 2016 Policy Address.
The Government has earmarked a
site for us to build a mega-campus
that can support and inspire our
students to pursue excellence; and
funds have been assigned to provide
tuition fee subsidies for three cohorts
of VTC students admitted to selected
professional part-time programmes.
New Generation of
Professional Workforce
A successful economy hinges on
a highly-skilled and professional
workforce. To maintain and enhance
its global competitiveness, Hong
Kong needs people who encompass a
wide range of capabilities at different
knowledge and skill levels. Our goal at
VTC is to nurture high-quality manpower
for Hong Kong through the provision of
transformative learning opportunities.
During the year, we rolled out a number
of significant VPET initiatives, aimed at
helping young people reach their full
potential and prepare themselves for
the demands of the 21st century world.
These included implementing dual-
track VPET in Hong Kong, enhancing
the educational choices and pathways
available to students, and pursuing
research excellence.
Echoing the Government’s call, we also
promote STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics)
education and encourage our students
to develop creativity, innovation and
entrepreneurship, as well as adopting
positive values and attitudes.
The positive feedback to our Earn &
Learn Scheme and a steady growth
in numbers of our local and non-local
students on the campuses demonstrate
that we are on the right track.
