Basic Information

The programme aims to provide students with the necessary technical and professional knowledge and skills, via the blending of theoretical knowledge and practical application, to become professionals in Computer, Electronic and Communications Engineering, Control and Automation, or related fields.

The programme is designed with an emphasis on generic and language training, whole-person development and workplace experience to better prepare students for further studies and employment after graduation.

This programme is recognised by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) as satisfying the academic requirements for its Associate Membership.

Remarks

Students are required to follow the programme arrangements stipulated by IVE, on average 4 evenings per week, normally 3 semesters per academic year.

One HKALE A-Level subject / Two AS-Level subjects at Grade E or above; AND Five HKCEE subjects at Grade E / Level 2 or above, including Chinese Language and English Language; OR
VTC Foundation Diploma (Level 3) / Diploma of Foundation Studies; OR
VTC Diploma in Vocational Education / Diploma of Vocational Education / Diploma of Vocational Baccalaureate; OR
Diploma of Yi Jin / Diploma of Applied Education; OR
Relevant and substantial work experience and/or prior qualification(s) obtained in or outside Hong Kong (e.g. assessed through recognition of prior learning and credit accumulation and transfer), with demonstrated ability to undertake sub-degree education; OR
Equivalent

Remarks

Applicants can use HKDSE Applied Learning (ApL) subjects (except ApL Chinese) for admission purpose. An "Attained", "Attained with Distinction (I)" and "Attained with Distinction (II)" in an ApL subject (Category B subjects) are regarded as equivalent to an HKDSE subject at "Level 2", "Level 3" and "Level 4" respectively for admission purpose.
For 2024 HKDSE and before, a "Grade D or E" and a "Grade C or above" in an HKDSE Other Language subject (Category C subjects) are regarded as equivalent to an HKDSE subject at "Level 2" and "Level 3" respectively; From 2025 HKDSE onwards, Language Proficiency Level A2 or above in French / German / Spanish, N3 or above in Japanese and TOPIK II: Grade 3 or above in Korean are also recognised as one of the five HKDSE subjects in fulfilling the general entrance requirement. An "Attained" in HKDSE Citizenship and Social Development is regarded as equivalent to an HKDSE subject at "Level 2" for admission purpose.
If one of the five HKDSE subjects is Citizenship and Social Development, the general entrance requirement would become "Attained" for Citizenship and Social Development and Level 2 or above in four other HKDSE subjects including Chinese Language and English Language. Besides, Level 2 or above in Mathematics Extended Part (Module 1 or Module 2) is also recognised as one of the five HKDSE subjects in fulfilling the general entrance requirement. If applicants have taken both Module 1 and Module 2, either one of the modules (with a higher level) will be counted for admission purpose.
HKCEE English Language taken in 2006 or before should have attained Grade E or above (Syllabus B) / Grade C or above (Syllabus A).
Applicable to holders of Diploma in Vocational Education / Diploma of Vocational Education (DVE) (students admitted to DVE in AY2017/18 or before are required to complete prescribed further studies modules).
Upon completion of the Diploma of Vocational Baccalaureate (DVB) programmes, students can progress to Higher Diploma programmes in VTC, subject to their BTEC and IGCSE results.
Applications with work experience and/or prior qualification(s) submitted will be assessed individually by the departments concerned.
Applicants may be required to attend an interview.

Articulation / Employment

Articulation

Graduates may apply for admission to the relevant BEng (Hons) degree programmes offered by the local universities. Upon admission to relevant degree programmes, graduates can apply for credit exemption. The level of exemption will be considered on individual basis by respective universities.
This Higher Diploma programme is recognised by overseas universities for admission. Graduates can further their studies on a full-time or part-time basis for a BEng (Hons) degree in Electronic and Computer Engineering^# ^ offered by the University of the West of England, Bristol (UWE), UK (12-months full-time or 18-months part-time programme study in Hong Kong in collaboration with SHAPE of VTC).
^#It is a matter of discretion for individual employers to recognise any qualification to which this course may lead. Please refer to the corresponding programme page in the website of SHAPE for the registered course no.
^{^}Similar Higher Diploma programmes were approved by the UWE as satisfying the admission requirement currently. This new programme will seek approval from UWE at appropriate time.

Career Prospects

Graduates may be employed as technicians in areas such as communication services and technologies, electronic and computer control, microcontroller systems development, computers and mobile devices programming, and network design, artificial intelligence and robotics, or related industries. After gaining a few years of working experience, graduates may advance to engineer positions in the related industry.

All students will be required to take and pass all of the Whole Person Development modules before graduation. Remarks

In addition to tuition fees, students of Higher Diploma programmes will be required to pay the fee for the study packages of Chinese & Putonghua modules.
Some students may be required to study bridging modules or enhancement programmes to better support their study; or to attend additional training and industrial attachment, for which separate fees will be charged.

Programme Highlights

URA x IVE Innovation Design Competition 2023/24

The project, "Barrier-Free Smart Mailbox 無障礙智慧信箱", was awarded the Gold Award and Smartest Design Award, which is developed by students from HD in Computer and Electronic Engineering at IVE (Sha Tin).

The 2nd "Belt and Road" International Skills Competition 2024

IVE Engineering student Wong Wai Shing participated in the IoT installation and debugging category. Wong competed and exchanged ideas with participants from 16 other countries, ultimately winning a silver medal.
