Some 1,000 students of the Vocational Training Council (VTC) completed the Speak for Success Programme funded by The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC) this year, logging the highest participation rate since inception. Meanwhile, 19 VTC students were awarded the HSBC Vocational Education Scholarship earlier in recognition of their remarkable academic and whole person development performances. The two programmes well attest to the industry support on training talent of Vocational and Professional Education and Training (VPET) to nurture the leaders of tomorrow.

A Sharing Session cum Award Presentation Ceremony of the Speak for Success Programme was held on 22 June (Friday).Mr Raymond CHENG, Group General Manager, Chief Operating Officer, Asia Pacific, HSBC attended the Ceremony as the Guest of Honor to present awards to the students and share with them his insights.

Established in 2014, the Speak for Success Programme has already benefitted over 3,100 VTC students. VTC Deputy Executive Director Mr LEUNG Yam-shing said, “Over the last four academic years, HSBC volunteers took part in various student activities with over 300 person-times. They walked the talk and took time out of their busy schedules to communicate with VTC students face-to-face in events like the ‘Dialogue with HSBC’ in which they shared their study, work and life experiences.” Mr LEUNG thanked for the support of HSBC on behalf of VTC. He further remarked that students had gained a lot as they have improved communication skills, extended horizons and affirmed their life directions.

The Speak for Success Programme aims at enhancing the communication skills of VTC students studying higher diploma and diploma of foundation studies programmes through drama workshops, talks, exchanges with HSBC staff and others. Public speaking and presentation abilities of students will be raised as a result, priming them for leadership roles in the future. On the day of the presentation ceremony, three awards were also conferred, namely Best Performance, Best Improvement and Best Presentation Team.

Meanwhile, 19 VTC students were presented the HSBC Vocational Education Scholarship each worth HK$20,000 in the HSBC Scholars Day 2018 held on 15 June (Friday). Established in 2015, the Scholarship awards the Higher Diploma or Associate Degree students from 11 tertiary institutions for their excellence and accomplishments, especially in their vocational aspirations and commitment to Hong Kong.

Selected VTC candidates for the scholarship had to undergo rounds of screening by separate judging panels formed by VTC staff and HSBC senior executives. Year 2 student of Higher Diploma in Leisure Management offered by VTC member institution, the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE), FONG Ka-bo is one of the awardees. Till now he has been bestowed scholarships worth some HK$90,000. Ka-po is being offered a conditional offer to a bachelor’s degree programme of the City University of Hong Kong on track to his dream to be a physical education teacher.
