Enhancing
Research Capabilities
To support Government’s efforts to
promote technological transformation
and enhance the quality of its VPET
programmes, the VTC has intensified
its efforts to advance innovation and
research excellence.
In 2015/16, THEi successfully
secured funding of HK$12.9 million
from Hong Kong’s Research Grants
Council to conduct applied research
activities in a number of subject areas
and to establish a central research
office within THEi. During the year, 20
projects have been supported by the
VTC research seed funding scheme for
conducting pilot research activities.
A Research Fellow/Visiting Fellow
Scheme has also been established to
support research activities, particularly
in the three priority areas of Vocational
Education and Training, Social
Innovation for an Ageing Population and
Environment and Sustainability.
Staff capacity to conduct research is
continuously being enhanced through
participation in collaborative research,
training workshops, seminars and
symposiums. In November 2015, a
research project called ‘Smart Robotic
Companion for the Elderly’, developed
by VTC teaching staff and students,
was showcased in the InnoCarnival
2015 organised by the Innovation and
Technology Commission.
