    Chief Executive commends WorldSkills Team
    Hong Kong on winning 7 Medallions for Excellence


    The Hong Kong Team emerged victorious from the 43rd WorldSkills Competition held in Brazil this month, winning 7 Medallions for Excellence. HKSAR Chief Executive LEUNG Chun-ying met with the team today (27 August) at the Government House congratulating the 18 competitors for their achievement. Mr Leung remarked that the young competitors had their horizons extended through partaking in the tournament, which also helped advance their skill standards and career development. The commitment of the Government to support vocational education and training has been reaffirmed by Mr Leung.
     
    Hailed the “Skills Olympics”, the WorldSkills Competition gathered young skill elites around the world. There Hong Kong medallion awardees, coming from the Vocational Training Council (VTC) and the Construction Industry Council, made their mark and displayed internationally-benchmarked standards.  
     
    Among them, LAW Ming-fai, a Higher Diploma in Software Engineering graduate from Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE), a member institution of VTC Group, competed in the IT Software Solutions for Business trade. He won a Medallion for Excellence and was also named best Hong Kong competitor.
     
    LEUNG Wai-kit and YEUNG Hon-lung, graduates of the IVE Higher Diploma in Engineering Management, the seamless league brought them a medallion in the Mechatronics trade. In addition, two medallion awardees CHAN Shing-chung and SO Ka-yu, Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) Higher Diploma graduates in Visual Communication and Exhibition Design, competed in the Graphic Design Technology and Visual Merchandising and Window Dressing trades respectively.
     
    Beauty Therapy winner LAU Ho-ying is a graduate of the Diploma in Vocational Education (Beauty Care) at the Youth College, also a member institution of VTC Group; whereas another Diploma in Vocational Education (Hairdressing) winner, LAU Ka-ho, shone in the Hairdressing trade.
     
    Meanwhile Wall and Floor Tiling winner HUI Yip-keung is enrolled in the Construction Industry Council’s Basic Craft Course in Bricklaying, Plastering and Tiling.
     
    Held 11 to 16 August, 43rd WorldSkills Competition held in São Paulo, Brazil has attracted some 1,200 young talents from over 60 countries and regions to compete. The biennial WorldSkills Competition is a prestigious international event that promotes professional expertise and skills to raise awareness of vocational education and training in the international community. The Hong Kong competitors are winners of the WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition 2014, jointly organised by the Vocational Training Council (VTC), the Construction Industry Council and the Clothing Industry Training Authority, and selected by experts for the WorldSkills Competition. Since first participating in 1997, the Hong Kong Team has won two Golds, one Silver, four Bronze and 39 Medallions for Excellence (including this year’s haul).

    Established in 1982, the Vocational Training Council (VTC) is the largest vocational education, training and professional development group in Hong Kong with some 250,000 students and trainees each year. The mission of VTC is to provide a valued choice to school leavers and working people to acquire the values, knowledge and skills for lifelong learning and enhanced employability, and also to provide valued supports to industries for their manpower development. VTC has 13 member institutions including the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi) , the Institute of Professional Education And Knowledge (PEAK) , the School for Higher and Professional Education (SHAPE) , the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) , the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) , International Culinary Institute (ICI) , Hospitality Industry Training and Development Centre (HITDC) , Chinese Cuisine Training Institute (CCTI) , Maritime Services Training Institute (MSTI) , Youth College , Pro-Act by VTC , Integrated Vocational Development Centre (IVDC) and Shine Skills Centre.

    Having undergone tough preparations with their expert teachers, the competitors, accomplished the four-day tasks in São Paulo, Brazil and were finally awarded 7 Medallions for Excellence. Indeed a honour of Hong Kong. The 18 competitors and their experts posed together with HKSAR Chief Executive.
