BCS Mentorship Programme 2010-11 is now open for applicationnewrotate

On behalf of the British Computer Society (Hong Kong Section), we would like to invite you to join the BCS Mentorship Programme 2010-11. The programme is introduced to provide a platform for ICT tertiary students and fresh graduates to seek guidance in career and professional development from mentors, and aims at broadening mentees’ horizon and inspiring exposure, enhancing their internal value and preparing them to tackle challenges in the future. Over 110 mentees from more than 11 tertiary institutions and universities have participated in the programme last year. All mentors are ICT professionals and leaders from various industries.
 
The BCS Mentorship Programme 2010-11 is now open for application. Please take this opportunity to learn from those ICT mentors and submit your application before the deadline. Enclosed are the programme information. For details and application, please visit the following web site:

HKIE Prize for Outstanding Engineering Students 2008/2009

Our Higher Diploma in Software Engineering student, FOK Chun Hong, obtained the HKIE Prize for Outstanding Engineering Students 2008/2009. This prize aims to recognize the Higher Diploma and equivalent courses engineering students with excellent academic achievements and to encourage them to pursue their careers in engineering profession.

 

Hong Kong RFID Awards 2009

Final year students in the Higher Diploma in Information Technology for Logistics course participated in the Hong Kong RFID Award Competition in the U-21 category organized by GS1 Hong Kong and have been awarded Certificate of Merits. The award gives recognition to outstanding achievements of young talents who have demonstrated excellence in the application of RFID technology to maximize efficiency in the supply chain and logistics. Congratulations to Kwan Ping Yuen, Lau Chi Hung, So Tsz Fai and Tang Sai Kui.

 

Congratulations to ICT students

The “ 5th Networking Academy Skills Competition” was successfully held at IVE-TY on 25 Aug, 2009.  It was well attended by over 140 participants including both secondary and post-secondary students from Hong Kong and Macau (see the attached photo). The event was received compliments from both IVE and Cisco management. In terms of competition results, one of the IVE (TY) teams received bronze medals. Joseph Lin of Cisco Systems (HK) presented the trophy to our students as shown in the picture. It is the fifth consecutive year that IVE (TY) teams can receive awards. CMA and Donors Scholarship 2008/09

A final year student from 41303A has been awarded a scholarship by The Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong. Mr. Michael Wong, JP, Deputy Secretary for Education presented her the award on 17th December, 2008.

Telecommunications and Networking Graduate Success

TAM, ka Yan (pictured far left below) received a Higher Diploma in Telecommunications and Networking with a Credit award from ICT/IVE (Tsing Yi) in 2005.  She subsequently obtained a B.Eng. (Hons) in Electronic and Communication Engineering from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (UST) in 2008. During her studies at UST, she received the silver award of the President's Cup 「校長杯」. The competition is an annual event for undergraduate students to compete for the award based on outstanding achievements in research and innovation.

Telecommunications Engineering Graduates Successes

TSUI, Yip Sum received a Higher Diploma in Telecommunications Engineering from ICT/IVE (Tsing Yi) with a Distinction award in 2002.  He obtained a B.Eng. (First class Hons) and M.Phil. from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (UST) in 2005 and 2007 respectively. During his studies at UST, he received Sumida & Ichiro Yawata Foundation Scholarships. During his postgraduate studies, he was involved in the development of a Single-Chip Passive UHF RFID Tags and Readers.  

Mok, San Ming received a Higher Diploma in Telecommunications Engineering from ICT/IVE (Tsing Yi) with a Distinction award in 2003.  He obtained a B.Eng. (Hons) from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (UST) in 2006. He is now pursing his Ph.D degree in wireless communications at UST. During his studies at UST, he received a research patent with the title of Combined Rate and Precoder Design for Slow Fading Correlated MIMO Channels with Limited Feedback in 2008.

Congratulations to LAM Chung Leung, a Higher Diploma in Software Engineering (41303) graduate (2007/08), who has been awarded the Hong Kong Institute of Engineering Prize for Outstanding Engineering Students.

Congratulations to Higher Diploma in T&N students Cheng Cheuk Kin (41304/A/1) Lee Sing Fung (41304/2) and Chung On Yeung (41304/2). They won the First runner-ups in the 4th Hong Kong-Macau Youth Networking Skills Competition (post secondary) on June 28, 2008. Barbara Chiu, the General Manger of Cisco Systems (HK) presented the trophy to our students as shown in the picture. In fact, T&N students of IVE (TY) have been the winners for four straight years.

Jockey Club Summer Internship Programme for IVE Students 2008 - Kick-off Ceremony

3 students from 41309A Year 1 have been selected to participate in the Jockey Club Summer Internship Programme. The program will last for 2 months till end of August.

In this summer internship programme, about 170 students will go to Beijing for 8 weeks from June to August under attachment in companies of different industries and trades.  Students can polish their language and work skills as well as get early familiarization with the working environment and culture of China’s Mainland.  The programme is subsidized by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.

T&N students Wong Mei Ching, Lee Wing Shing and Wu Kai Ho have won Silver award (finished product category) in the ICT Innovation Competition of the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day – Hong Kong 2008.In addition, T&N students Chan Chun Yin, Lee Man Fung and Leung Ho Lim have won Silver award (development proposal category). The events are organized by Communications Association of Hong Kong (CAHK) and the Honorable Sin Chung-kai, Legislative Councillor (IT).

Study Tour to Xian Jiaotong University

In July 2006, the ICT Department organized a study tour to Xian Jiaotong University. A group of students came to the historical city of Xian for the student exchange activity. The exchange program aims at allowing students of both institutes to develop mutual understanding on different aspects of developments such as social, cultural, economic, industrial and educational developments. Many ICT students enjoyed the benefit of learning Putonghua in a total immersion environment. Students from the Xian Jiaotong University have been scheduled to pay us a visit in October 2006.. Congratulations to ICT Students

HD in Telecommunications and Networking (41304A/2)/ students Han Ka Yue, Fung Ka Cheong and Ho Ting Fung, finished as the second runner-ups in the Second Hong Kong-Macau Youth Networking Skills Competition (post secondary session) on May 13, 2006. Similar to the last year results, ICT/TY has the best results among all IVE campuses including CW and ST. Contestants came from various institute including IVE (TY), IVE (ST), IVE (CW), HKU SPACE, Macau University and Pui Ching Education Center.

Visit to Panyu Polytechnic

On March 26, 2006 a group of ICT and MIT students from IVE(TY), led by their Department Head Dr YK Leung,  spent  a weekend visiting Panyu Polytechnic. This exchange visit aims at enhancing students' perception of the Pearl River Delta, recognition of Hong Kong's employment prospect, differences in life and culture between the two lands and improvement of bilateral friendship. Students from both institutes held talks exchanging views on learning and life experience. In a seminar on employment, Dr Karl Leung of IVE(TY) deliberated and initiated discussions on  students' employment prospects, employers' expectations, market demand, etc. Please click here for some of the photos taken during the visit.

Hong Kong-Macau Youth Networking Skills Competition 

Contestants from secondary schools and post-secondary schools were invited to participate the event. Department of ICT is pleased to be the host of the event, which will be held on May 14, 2005. The venue is Network Technology Centre (A204). In addition to IVE (Tsing Yi), Cisco Systems (思科系統), Pui Ching Education Center & Middle school (培正教育中心 / 培正中學), Macau Productivity and Technology Transfer Center (澳門生產力暨科技轉移中心) and Association of IT Leaders in Education (資訊科技教育領袖協會) are the organizers or sponsors. A HD in Applied Statistics and Computing Graduate Passed the Final Stage of the Hong Kong Statistical Society Examination

One of our graduates, Mr. Chan Tse Shing, of the Higher Diploma in Applied Statistics and Computing passed the final stage of the Hong Kong Statistical Society Examination. Based on Mr Chan's exceptionally outstanding performance, he was admitted to the Master Programme of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.  Click here for more details.                                                                              

Summer Camp at Zhong Shan University

In this summer, our Department made a meaningful and rewarding visit to the Zhong Shan Universtiy in Guangzhou. It was a ten-day summer camp that enabled the exchange between the students from the two institutes. ICT Department and IEE (Hong Kong Chapter) jointly organised GSM Mobile System Workshop for IEE members and ICT students on 24th Apr 2004

This workshop introduced the basic knowledge of GSM mobile system.  With the support of Dept. of ICT, HKIVE(TY), a real GSM system was used to demonstrate the knowledge.  The workshop was organised by Dino Ma, Lecturer, ICT/IVE(TY).  Click here for more details.

BEA Systems Donates $5M of Software to IVE

BEA, the world's leading application infrastructure company, has donated 150 BEA WebLogic Platform Developer Kits to us, with a worth of over HK$5 Million. The platform will enrich the curriculum of both the HD in Computer System Administration and the HD in Software Engineering courses.
