System Facilities

[Chinese Version ]

The department has thirteen laboratories to support teaching in the fields of software development and network technology. All laboratories are equipped with up-to-date computer hardware and software. They are interconnected through a network which is currently being enhanced to provide a Gigabit Ethernet backbone to each laboratory. In turn, this network is connected to a campus-wide network which provides access to other computing resources, including access to the Internet.

The department has more than 300 PCs which are supported by a range of  Linux and Window 2000 servers, together with a dedicated server for multimedia applications development.  All machines are networked together forming a departmental sub-network under the campus-wide network. Students can also access the computing facilities of the College Computer Center.

During this academic year, a new Network Technology Centre is being set up to support a range of networking activities, including network management, security, broadband connection as well as applications including IP Telephony. The department is a registered Cisco Local Academy and has a wide range of equipment in the centre to cover training to CCNP level. The department is also a partner of Microsoft through the MSDN Academic Alliance program which helps ensure teaching facilities and material are kept up to date.

An Object-oriented Technology Centre has also been recently established to support teaching and consultancy services relating to object-oriented technology. The centre is engaged on a major project with local industry to apply OOT and Software re-engineering to the companies system development process.

This center focuses on software testing and is equipped with $5,000,000 worth of software donated by Compuware Asia-Pacific Ltd.It is the first software-testing teaching laboratory in Hong Kong to provide students with quality and state-of-the-art software testing tools to learn practical software testing techniques.
