Skilling for the Future (2020 Update)

In 2009, a team formed by IVE Engineering students and teachers pooled their knowledge and skills to co-develop an eco-friendly and solar-powered car called SOPHIE. Over the years, the team continued refining and upgrading the style, functions, effectiveness and efficiency of SOPHIE. In October 2017, SOPHIE VI which brought together cross-disciplinary perspectives and expertise in engineering and design of HKDI graduates, emerged as the third runner-up in the Cruiser Class of World Solar Challenge (WSC) in Australia. Following the success of 2017, the team participated in WSC 2019 with its new edition of solar-powered car SOPHIE 6s, which deployed a brand-new electric motor system co-developed with a Hong Kong motor development company. With steady performance and excellent team spirit, the team won the second runner-up prize. Through the inter-disciplinary innovation process, students also learn to have self-discipline, have determination to grasp new skills, to be tolerant and respectful of teamwork, which are important attributes for success in the dynamic and competitive world.
