Skilling for the Future (2020 Update)

Green Skills The environmental awareness of VTC students is raised by “greening” the curriculum and facilitating the adoption of in-house environmental practices. Students are also better equipped in adapting products, services and processes that take into account climate change as well as environmental requirements and regulations. This is an ability and a mindset needed in all sectors and at all levels of the workforce 6 . Since 2011, the Engineering Discipline has introduced an enrichment module titled “Green Knowledge and Practices” in which Higher Diploma students from all disciplines can enrol. This module aids students in understanding international and local environmental and sustainability problems, as well as identifying practical solutions to overcome them. The VTC is committed to building a sustainable environment conducive to developing good habits for its students to stay green. For example, an on-grid wind and solar system has been installed at IVE (Tsing Yi) to generate electricity for the laboratory located one floor below. A food decomposer has been installed at the Chinese Culinary Institute (CCI) to reduce the volume of waste, and to decompose daily organic kitchen waste into water. A number of environmentally-friendly facilities are also available for students in the VTC Halls of Residence (Tsing Yi). These include a solid waste quantification and tracking system, kitchen waste processor, solar systems, and even spaces for students to air-dry their clothes instead of providing laundry dryers.
