Skilling for the Future (2020 Update)
In Hong Kong, VPET provides a vertical progression route for students, including Degree level qualifications. It is not a single- track route, but one that extends in different directions and offers diverse opportunities. Students who choose the vocational route can flexibly move up the higher education ladder. Each VPET programme or qualification is generally designed for a specific profession and the competencies required. Learners can enter or exit the path at different levels. Secondary school leavers can choose from a broad variety of career-focused programmes according to their varying abilities, interests and learning needs. VPET offers students multiple progression pathways. Nothing can stand in the way if students aspire to attain a Degree through taking the VPET route. They can also change to the academic route if they want to progress to the next level in academic education. Every year, about 40% of VTC Higher Diploma graduates progress to obtain Degree qualifications, while the remaining 60% join the workforce. Graduates of the VTC consistently enjoy a high employment rate of 90% on average. With increased aspiration to attain Degree qualifications, young people have more choices to articulate to applied degree education both locally and globally, such as the degree programmes offered by THEi since 2012 and SHAPE in collaboration with recognised overseas universities since 2003. 34
