48 Upskilling the workforce and continuous professional development are pivotal for sharpening the competitive edge of the industry. With this in mind, the VTC endeavours to inspire lifelong learning and workforce resilience. Promoting Lifelong Learning During the year, the VTC collaborated with industry partners to develop programmes that can enable in-service practitioners to keep abreast of the latest industry knowledge and trends through learning and practice. New programmes in such areas as gas engineering, power engineering and Industry 4.0 were launched. Under the Engineering Training Subsidy Scheme supported by the Government, students admitted to designated professional part-time VTC programmes in the areas of construction and engineering would be entitled to tuition fee subsidy. This further promotes lifelong learning and upskilling for industries with strong manpower demand. PEAK has been entrusted by the Government to implement a three-year pilot programme to enhance talent training for the insurance sector. In 2017/18, about 1,500 insurance practitioners were sponsored under the programme to study professional training courses. Moreover, tertiary and university students joined the sponsored internship programmes. The IVDC meanwhile continues to offer tailor-made programmes for people with diverse educational attainments and backgrounds.
