Honorary Fellowships

Dr Patrick POON Sun-cheong embarked on a career in life insurance industry in Hong Kong in 1972, and became the first Hong Kong-born citizen to obtain Fellowship from the Institute of Actuaries of the United Kingdom.  He soon also obtained fellowships of actuaries in Australia, China and Taiwan.  In 1987, he joined Aetna International to establish its new life insurance business in Taiwan.  Dr Poon is widely known as the “Insurance Godfather” in Taiwan.
 

During his 40-year career in the life insurance industry, Dr Poon has won many community accolades including “The Hong Kong Ten Outstanding Young Persons Award” in 1984, the “Outstanding Manager Award (CEO and President Category)” in 1988, “The K T Li Medal of Management” in 1997, the “Order of Brilliant Star Medal” in 1999, the “Best Insurance Leadership Award” and the “Personality of the Year” award at the Asia Insurance Industry Awards in 2000.
 

Dr Poon is an Associate of the Society of Actuaries, a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries, and Charter President of the Rotary Club of Hong Kong Harbour.  Dr Poon has served as a board member of the International Insurance Society and a member of the Panel of Judges at the Asian Insurance Industry Annual Awards.  He is Past President of the Actuarial Society of Hong Kong, and has been previously appointed a member of the Insurance Advisory Committee by the Government.  Dr Poon was conferred Honorary University Fellow by University of Hong Kong in 2011, and Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws by Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2013.
 

Dr Poon has close connection with the VTC.  He was appointed a member of the Board of Governors of THEi in 2014 and has provided invaluable advice to the VTC on the investment of its funds.  As Chairman of the 2014/15 District Fundraising Committee of the Rotary International, District 3450, Dr Poon has been very enthusiastic in raising funds for the VTC to support students to further their studies.
