57 SolWind Tree – Generating Clean Energy Rain or Shine Two IVE Engineering students Jacky YIP Tung-wan and Matthew LAM Ho-hei jointly created the SolWind Tree, an innovative renewable energy system, with the support of VTC Smart City Innovation Centre. This hybrid design generates clean energy 24/7, even during extreme weather events like super typhoons. Its operational efficiency is optimised through hardware design and an automated system using public weather data. This creative installation has earned multiple awards, including Bronze Award at the CLP Empowering Youth for a Sustainable Future Programme 2024, Merit Award at the Urban Renewal Authority x IVE Innovation Design Competition 2023/24, and the Silver Award in VTC ITCC Innovation Awards 2024/25 (Innovation Track). Most importantly, a new team of Engineering students has now taken over the SolWind Tree project. The new team and VTC Smart City Innovation Centre will explore possibilities with the industry to place the prototype in coastal area for data collection and further design refinement, promoting renewable energy application in Hong Kong. During their study at IVE, Jacky (left, photo on right) and Matthew (right, photo on right) together developed the prototype of SolWind. The project has been succeeded by a new team of students for continued refinement (photo on left).
