14 Contents Message from Executive Director Sustainability Commitment Low-carbon Environment Education and Engagement Workforce Well-being and Development Awards and Recognitions Outlook The 4th New Energy New Generation and Electric Vehicles Week IVE Engineering Discipline organised a competition for 77 teams from 36 secondary schools to design and build solar-powered cars, boats and gliders, encouraging the application of engineering knowledge and promoting renewable energy and sustainable innovation. Bus Body Design Competition Students from the Diploma of Foundation Studies (Design) programme participated in the “Sustainability • Get Set • Go” Bus Body Design Competition co-organised with KMB. Their eco-themed illustrations were transformed into full bus body designs, spreading environmental awareness citywide. Upcycled Fashion Show CLP Power collaborated with Youth College (International) and other partners to stage an upcycled fashion show, where students and elderly participants cocreated innovative designs from recycled clothing, showcasing sustainability and intergenerational creativity. Joint Art Exhibition on Mental Health Recovery As a collaboration among VTC’s Community Engagement Unit (CEU), Youth College’s Diploma of Vocational Education (DVE) (Mechanical Engineering) students and Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service, the pipe lamp artworks showcased at the “Illuminating the Extraordinary” exhibition symbolised mental health recovery journeys, blending engineering, art and social awareness. Intelligent Elderly Care Monitoring System Making use of AI, sensors and IoT, SAFERIN is a one-stop automated system addressing manpower shortages in elderly home. Developed by the HD Software Engineering team, the project received multiple awards in regional innovation competitions, including the Best Innovative Technology Application at the Asia Pacific ICT Alliance Awards 2024. The Hydrogen Energy Education and Talent Development Centre With support from the Environment and Conservation Fund (ECF), THEi launched Hong Kong’s first hydrogen-focused education centre to foster public understanding and develop industry talent in hydrogen energy. DESIGN AND INNOVATIONS AI-Powered Trash Identification System Developed by the HD Software Engineering team, BeachBot uses AI to identify various types of beach trash. The system received multiple accolades, including the 6th Greater Bay Area STEAM Excellence Award (tertiary category) and 2nd runnerup in the Cross-Strait, Hong Kong and Macau University Student Innovation Competition (tertiary category). ENGAGEMENT The VTC promotes sustainability through creative design and innovations, and community and industry collaboration and exchange, empowering students to apply their skills in real-world projects. Across collaborations with industry, NGOs and the public, students have delivered impactful solutions, fostered social and environmental awareness and earned recognition for their innovative contributions.
