Course Aims This course provides an authentic context for students to acquire the fundamental theories and concepts of film and transmedia, and helps students develop their creative thinking, professional ethics and various soft skills in communication, team work, problem-solving and critical thinking through handson practice and the interactive learning and teaching activities. 2. Learning Outcomes Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: 1. demonstrate a basic understanding of roles, responsibilities and professional ethics of a practitioner in the film and transmedia industry; 2. apply basic theories and skills in film language including cinematography, editing, sound and scene design; 3. express visual ideas through storyboarding and transmedia storytelling principles; 4. develop critical thinking skills and appreciation skills through an understanding of film and transmedia industry, different cultural characteristics and styles of moving images; 5. integrate teamwork and problem-solving skills in film production projects; and 6. enhance self-understanding and explore directions on further studies and career pursuits.

Content and Organisation Module One: Overview of Film and Transmedia Industry (12 hours) In this module, students will have an overview of the profile and trend of the film and transmedia industry in global context, roles and responsibilities as well as media ethics required of an industry practitioner. Major contents:  Film and transmedia industry profile and trend in global context  Film and transmedia industry in Hong Kong and the Mainland  Roles and responsibilities of practitioners  Copyright and intellectual property right issues Module Two: Fundamentals of Film Production (45 hours) This module focuses on skill training of filmmaking. Students will be equipped with the equipment operation techniques and knowledge essential to onlocation production and post-production. Major contents:  Fundamental cinematography  Editing theory and application  Sound design and application  Scene design and realisation Module Three: Transmedia Storytelling (45 hours) This module introduces the principles and elements of storytelling and enables students to have strong awareness of the content in relation to the platforms as well as the audience. Major contents:  Application in film narrative of transmedia  Principles and elements of transmedia storytelling  Scriptwriting and storyboarding  Implementation of visual storytelling  Content creation in relation to different media platforms (such as videosharing websites, social media and interactive media)

Students will be taught to consider different forms of film aesthetics in wider contexts. Also, they will be given elective choices to further their studies on one of the two specialised areas – Cinematographic Art or Art of Post-Production, where they will elevate their learnt skills in Module 2 from operational level to artistic level. Major contents:  Global and local film appreciation  Electives-“Cinematographic art”/ “Art of post-production” Module Five: Integrated Project: Short Film Production (42 hours) This module consolidates students’ prior learning in film production. Students will learn about the film production pipeline at different production stages in more detail. Towards the end of this module, students are required to apply and integrate their specialised skills, with consideration of the legal and ethical issues related to the film industry, in a short film production project. Course Duration : 180 hours Students must attend all lessons. If absence is unavoidable, students should make a formal application by completing the “Leave Application Form” (Appendix A), substantiated with documented proof, to the Course Leader or Course Tutor concerned as soon as possible. In case of absence on medical grounds, students should inform the Course Tutor beforehand as far as possible and make a formal application for leave with documented proof (such as medical certificate) immediately upon resuming to studies. The minimum attendance requirement for Applied Learning (ApL) courses is 80% of the total number of contact hours. Question types include multiple choice questions, fill-in-the-blanks questions and short questions. October Year 1 10% 2 Cinematography Practical Assessment Students are required to shoot a specified series of still and moving images to demonstrate their knowledge of basic film language and understanding of basic cinematography including composition, depth of focus, exposure, white balance and shot size. December Year 1 10% 3 Editing a Dialog Scene Practical Assessment Students are required to produce a dialog scene with ready-made movie clips by utilising the non-linear video editing system to demonstrate their understanding on editing theory and audio design. March Year 1 15% 4 Transmedia Storytelling Written Test Students are required to apply transmedia storytelling skills to create a story with platform-specific content for an assigned media platform, and visualise the story in the form of script and creative board of designated format. May Year 1 20% 5 Film Aesthetics Production Project Students are required to, in accordance with their elective module, design a cinematographic / editing style for the script developed in Assessment Task 4 and demonstrate the style in the form of video, with written descriptions illustrating the design concept. December Year 2 15% 6 Integrated Project on Short Film Production Production Project and Written Report (a) Group work: Students in groups initiate a production project and produce a short film, with the application of the basic knowledge of film and transmedia including script creating, shooting and post-production. (b) Individual work: Each student is required to (i) edit own version of short film with the one produced in group; and (ii) submit the whole production report, including a reflection report. Performance Descriptors of Attained Students at this level typically: 1. demonstrate a basic knowledge and understanding of concepts and principles in the film and transmedia industry; 2. apply basic concepts and skills of filmmaking and transmedia storytelling to develop and communicate simple ideas in planning and making of motion pictures; 3. demonstrate creativity, basic management, presentation and collaborative skills in the creation and production of motion pictures as well as the critical thinking skills in appreciation and critique of films and transmedia projects of different styles; 4. apply basic communication skills to express ideas and work collaboratively with team members and related personnel in the creation and production of motion pictures 5. demonstrate the ability to analyse and evaluate different elements in visual communication and to propose simple solutions in the process of film making; 6. recognise and appreciate the work ethics and responsibilities required for the industry and demonstrate awareness of the relationships between the industry and the society and culture; and 7. demonstrate a basic understanding of the future trends of the film and transmedia industry and the ability to identify opportunities for selfdevelopment. 10. Further Studies and Employment Effective from the 2018 HKDSE Examination, the reporting of student performance in ApL courses is refined to “Attained”, “Attained with Distinction (I)” and “Attained with Distinction (II)”. Performance of “Attained with Distinction (I)” is comparable to Level 3 while “Attained with Distinction (II)” is comparable to Level 4 or above of Category A subjects of the HKDSE Examination. Further Studies Students under the new academic structure are eligible to apply for admission to Associate Degree or Higher Diploma programmes if they meet the minimum entrance requirements of Level 2 in five HKDSE subjects (including Chinese Language and English Language). For further studies in Degree programmes, ApL subjects are used as elective subjects, or considered for award of extra bonus or additional information, varying by individual institutions, faculties or programmes. Holders of the Diploma in Vocational Education / Diploma of Vocational Education (DVE) (students admitted to DVE in AY2017/18 or before are required to complete prescribed further studies modules) and holders of Yi Jin Diploma / Diploma Yi Jin are considered having met the general requirements of Higher Diploma programmes (not applicable to programmes with specific entrance requirements). 3. Diploma programmes are geared to prepare students for employment after graduation.
