The technical institutes offer a wide range of courses of
different levels and modes of attendance in order to satisfy the
needs of school leavers and people in employment on the one hand
and those of industry, commerce and the service sector on the
other.
Levels of courses
| Craft (or Post- Secondary 3/4) Courses |
These courses are offered in all modes of
study. The main medium of instruction is Cantonese. Full-time courses are designed to incorporate craft theory and basic skills training related to specific trades or occupations and thus provide an alternative route to senior secondary education. Graduates of a full-time craft course are awarded a craft certificate and they normally join an apprenticeship scheme to become qualified craftsmen. Part-time courses provide related technical education to apprentices, trainees as well as people in employment. |
| Bridging Courses | These courses are offered in all modes of
study. The main medium of instruction is Cantonese. One-year full-time Technician Preparatory Courses provide bridging for full-time craft course graduates seeking admission to respective technician level courses in the institutes. Part time courses of one or two years duration (including the General Certificate Course) also provide bridging for other craft course graduates or Secondary 3/4 leavers to relevant technician courses. |
| Technician (or Post-Secondary 5) Courses |
These courses are offered in all modes of
study. The main medium of instruction is English. The courses are designed to prepare young people for responsible, middle-level jobs in the industrial, commercial and service sectors of the community. A diploma is awarded to a student who successfully completes a two-year full-time course. A certificate is awarded on satisfactory completion of one-year full-time, a part-time day-release or an evening course. Most of these awards are accepted by local and overseas tertiary institutions as having satisfied their requirements for admission to higher-level studies. |
| Short Courses | The level of short courses varies from
craft to higher certificate. Normally, an attendance certificate is issued to a participant who has attended not less than 80% of the scheduled class meetings. |
Modes of Study
| Full-time | Full-time courses are of one or two
years' duration and normally extend over a study period of 36 weeks a year. |
| Part-time Day-release |
Part-time day-release courses normally
require attendance of one full day plus two or three evenings a week. The duration of most craft (or post-Secondary 3/4) courses is three years; however, Secondary 3 leavers from prevocational schools, graduates from industry training centres or technical institute full-time craft courses are normally granted exemption from the first year of a relevant course. The duration of most technician (or post-Secondary 5) courses is two years. Only apprentices/trainees sponsored by their employers or from the industry training centres are admitted into courses of this mode of study. |
| Block-release | In this mode of attendance,
apprentices/trainees are released by their employers for short 'Blocks' of full-time studies ranging from 6 to 18 weeks. |
| Part-time Evening | Most part-time evening courses require
attendance of three or four evenings a week normally for two hours each evening. The normal duration of these courses is three years. Classes are held in the institutes or in rented school premises which are used as outside centres. In the 1996/97 academic year, there will be a total of 26 outside centres. Priority will be given to applicants applying for admission to courses related to their work and/or recommended by employers. |
| Short Courses | Short courses on a wide range of subjects
are offered both in the term time and the summer vacation period to update the skills and knowledge of people in employment. They may also be organized on request by employers. Most short courses are run in the evening at the institutes. The duration of these courses ranges from a few hours to about 60 ho |
