of Vocational Education (Tsing Yi)
The Institute was established in 1993 as the Hong Kong Technical College (Tsing Yi) and became part of the IVE system in 1999. The campus is on a 6-hectare land in Tsing Yi Island and has a covered area of 32,000 sq. meters. The building design won an architectural award in energy conservation.
In the 2010/11 academic year, the Institute has near 6000 full time and over 2,000 part-time students in 5 academic departments, namely Automotive Engineering, Business Administration, Construction, Engineering, and Information and Communication Technology. Students study courses leading to a higher diploma award, and depending on their entry qualifications, the study can normally be completed between 1 to 4 years on a full time basis. Our academic staff are highly qualified professionals and they are supported by a team of dedicated technical and administrative staff. We also have many advanced equipment and facilities to support course delivery and self learning. For example, there are over 2,000 PCs in the campus for students’ use, and many of them are available for free-booking. They are located in the learning resources centre, computer rooms, departmental laboratories and workshops.
The curriculum of the higher diploma courses focuses on vocational education and is supplemented by practical and generic skills training. It provides the necessary knowledge and skills that allow our students to readily join the workforce after graduation. And during the past few years, despite the downturn in the local economy, the employment rate of our graduates has been consistently around 90%. To fulfill the aspiration of many students for further education, we have established articulation with local and overseas universities so that students may study towards a bachelor’s degree in Hong Kong. Furthermore, arrangements have been made with Swansea University, UK so that graduates of the Construction Discipline may enroll in the third year of their MEng programmes in the UK.
To ensure our courses meet the needs of the employers, we invited prominent professionals from industry and commerce to participate in our programme boards and advisory committees. Through their participation, the curricula of the courses are enhanced and updated.
