What are the differences between the Sub-degree programmes, Higher Diploma and Associate Degree?

Sub-degree programmes include programmes leading to Higher Diploma, Associate Degree and Professional Diploma qualifications, and are regarded as higher education programmes. In general, the Higher Diploma puts more emphasis on professional knowledge and practical vocational skills while the Associate Degree focuses more on the liberal studies.

Are VTC programmes recognised by employers and the government?

VTC is the first institution in Hong Kong to be granted Programme Area Accreditation status from the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications, which represents official recognition for our programmes’ quality. Our programmes have been mapped onto the Qualifications Framework levels, giving students clear academic and vocational pathways to pursue their goals according to personal roadmaps.

Will the Higher Diploma qualification help my son or daughter find a job after graduation?

The long-standing history of the VTC Higher Diploma demonstrated the popularity of our graduates among employers and business industries. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Government has accepted Higher Diploma qualification as one of the entry requirements for appointment of some civil service grades. IVE and HKDI higher diploma programmes emphasise practical training, and cover knowledge and skills that are needed and valued in Hong Kong and beyond, while staying responsive and relevant to market demands. Our strong links with business employers also provide students with more attachment and employment opportunities, some 90% of IVE and HKDI full time Higher diploma graduates who choose to work have gained employment. 

Can my son or daughter articulate to a degree programme after completion of the Higher Diploma programme?

The VTC Higher Diploma award is widely recognised in the academia. Our graduates can apply for relevant degree programme in universities through:

More than 10,000 IVE/HKDI graduates were successfully enrolled in university in the last 3 years, of which more than 40% were admitted to local universities.

Are there any financial assistance schemes or scholarships for students to apply?

Students who have financial needs may apply for different financial assistance schemes, such as the Tertiary Student Finance Scheme or the Non-means-tested Loans Scheme for government subvented full-time Higher Diploma programmes. Students taking government non-subvented full-time programmes can apply for other financial assistance schemes, such as Financial Assistance Scheme for Post-Secondary Students, VTC Fee Remission Scheme or Non-means-tested Loan Scheme for Post-secondary Students.

There are also over 300 scholarships and award schemes for students with outstanding performance.
