Study at VTC > Parents > Parent Sharings

    Prof. Wong Po Choi

"VTC helps youths enhance their ability and confidence through vocational education!"
Former Chairman of Committee on Home-School Co-operation

"With my long years of working experience in parenting-related jobs, I can deeply understand the concern of parents who want their children to achieve good results in their studies and have a prosperous career. In fact, the current education system emphasises on knowledge but is detached from real life experiences. Examinations which focus on memorisation will only undermine children’s interest and confidence in learning without developing a particular skill.

VTC, the largest vocational training and education organisation in Hong Kong, is dedicated to offering a work-integrated education that caters to industrial needs, helping students regain their learning enthusiasm and confidence, as well as establishing their ability and attitude.

I once visited some of VTC’s campuses and centres and was quite impressed by the advanced learning facilities there. In particular, the training hotel at the Hospitality Industry Training and Development Centre and the training kitchen at the Chinese Cuisine Training Institute achieved existing industry standards. In this stimulating working environment, students receive training and practice with enlightening guidance from their teachers on the ways to do their tasks and behave. Every time VTC students demonstrate their fruitful results to me, I am moved by their perseverance and proactive learning attitude.

I think that every student should learn the right way to do things, and VTC is always a valuable choice for parents and students!"

    Mrs Chung

"He wouldn’t have done it without Yeo Chei Man Senior Secondary School and IVE!"
(Mother of IVE student Chung Wai Lung)

"Wai Lung always felt neglected and could not cope with the environment when he went to a traditional school because he suffered from dyslexia. However, Yeo Chei Man Secondary School (YCM) became a turning point, not only allowing Wai Lung to carry on his studies, but at the same time, discovering his hidden potential.

At YCM, Wai Lung discovered his interests and talent in design; so after graduating from YCM, he went straight into IVE taking a Higher Diploma in Computer Games and Animation. Now, he’s in the final year and will pursue further studies after graduation. He has already applied for a bachelor degree programme in a local university as well as a top-up degree offered by SHAPE.

I have seen changes in Wai Lung in many aspects after studying at YCM. Personality-wise, he is becoming more confident, sociable, and independent. IVE is a beacon of hope for Wai Lung, it helps unleash Wai Lung’s potential in games and animation design. This confirmed his interests, making him more committed to his studies. His talent in design was further reaffirmed by winning many industry competitions. He has proven himself to be an outstanding student of remarkable strength and perseverance.

I’m delighted Wai Lung chose IVE. He found his courses stimulating and I was reassured by the support he received. By combining theoretical and practical knowledge, Wai Lung was able to adapt to the subject easily, which allowed him progress to higher education successfully.

Lastly, I would like to say to parents in a similar situation: Remember, parents are a child’s safety net, therefore, know your child’s strengths. Giving respect and support to your child in their decisions is extremely important."

    Mr Lam

"I used to believe in traditional articulation path; but my son in IVE changed my mind!"
(Father of IVE student Lam Chun Yue, Chris)

"Chris was successfully enrolled into secondary 6, but after completing the first term, he decided to quit it and took IVE Higher Diploma in Software Engineering so as to pursue his interest. At that time, I felt worry about his decision as I always thought the traditional articulation path would be the only way for my boy to get a bright future. However, my view changed when I saw the transition of Chris after he studied in IVE.

I realized he became more active and enthusiastic towards his study and his self-confident was also enhanced. What surprised and made me proud was that my son won the champion in the 2008 Hong Kong Youth Skills Competition in the Information Technology Category (Software Applications) after being encouraged and supported by his teachers. He was then selected to represent Hong Kong to take part in the 40th Worldskills Competition. Chris completed bachelor degree in the City University of Hong Kong after graduated from IVE and now he is studying master degree in the Hong Kong University. I should thank IVE for providing such a good study environment for my son and the teachers there have also given him adequate fundamental subject knowledge to make him becoming what he is now.

All parents want their children to have a bright future. I am now very satisfied as I know my son has a chance to unleash potential in his interested field and head to his dream."

    Mrs Ng

"IVE helps my daughter build a bright future!"
(Mother of IVE student Ng Ming Sum, Bobo)

"My daughter is always a hardworking girl. However, she couldn’t adapt to the teaching methods adopted by traditional secondary schools. Thus, her results in the HKCEE were not satisfactory. As her mother, I constantly encouraged her to look farther and try different options just as the old saying goes, ‘All roads lead to Rome’. Bobo finally chose the programme in Building Services Engineering offered by IVE. I really didn’t expect the huge changes to Bobo brought on by this choice.

At IVE, Bobo met many knowledgeable and experienced teachers, and had the opportunity to join an internship at a famous engineering company as well as participate in various industrial visits. She became more active and open than before. The flexible and interactive teaching approach of IVE greatly enhanced Bobo’s way of thinking and broadened her horizons. She made such great improvements in her studies that she won the Alistair Harvey Scholarship, which gave her full sponsorship to pursue undergraduate studies in the UK. She continued her studies to the Ph.D level and after graduation, she was appointed as a lecturer in the university, realising her dream of being a professor! IVE provided Bobo with another path to further studies outside of the traditional education system, giving her the opportunity to study at a university and pursue her own interests and dreams.

For students facing the public examinations, I encourage them not to just follow their peers blindly. It is important that they know their own interests and find a suitable way for future development. Meanwhile, parents should give their children more support and encouragement by gathering information together, helping them identify their interests and finding an ideal way to further their studies."

    Mrs Lee

"Youth College is blessing to my son!"
(Mother of Youth College Student Lee Kwan Yin, Quincy)

"Quincy is now in his final year of Diploma Programme in the Vocational Education Programme (DVE) at Youth College. Over the past three years, I have seen many good changes in him. I would like to give my heartfelt thanks to Youth College. As a parent I am delighted to see my son succeed with flying colours.

Quincy has an IQ score of 139 despite suffering from dyslexia, which has forbidden him from receiving education in traditional schools. My husband and I have all along been deeply worried about his education and career. We should be thankful for the grace of God when we read an advertisement for Youth College, and we thought there was no harm in considering this option.

Since studying at Youth College, Quincy has made significant advances in everything from his personality and mindset to his communication skills. His faith returns to him. He has changed and becomes more outgoing and dedicated to his studies. To a large extent, this is due to the devoted teachers of Youth College, who have put their hearts and souls into nurturing every student. Students feel that they are genuinely cared for and thereby a sincere bond of friendship is formed among them. Students feel that they have a place to turn when they run into difficulties. More than that, the”Personal Development” modules of the DVE programmes deserve praise. Quincy gravitates towards these enrichment programmes because they are intriguing, useful and full of variety. The DVE programme is very well-designed and helps balance development of body and mind.

After this semester, Quincy will progress to IVE. With the aid of VTC, he is making great strides in his studies and rising to the challenges ahead of him."
