IVE students shine in e-game design competition

Students of the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) excelled in open competitions. They walked away with the championships of two categories as well as the Grand Award of the Shatin to Central Link (SCL) E-Game Design Competition co-organised by the MTR Corporation and the Hong Kong Computer Society. Judges said their designs were comparable to the works of professional designers. The winning game designs are now available for public download.

KWAN Chung-kiu, WAN Ying-kit and AU Chin-to, students of the Department of Electronic and Information Engineering, IVE (Sha Tin), won the championship of the category of Mobile Application and the Grand Award with their design named “Tap Tap SCL”. Their game was original, where players were required to devise the shortest and the most convenient MTR route for commuters, taking into factors like peak periods and the points of departure and arrival of the journey. Gold coin awards would be gained if the commuters take the SCL. However, if the route was wrong or took too long a time, the commuters would be dissatisfied and gamers would loss gold coins.

KWAN Chung-kiu said that the game was fun-filled and enabled gamers to get to know the information of the new rail link and location of the interchanges, which chimed in with the purpose of the competition to promote the SCL. Furthermore, in order to attract female gamers, students paid special attention to the design of the interface, which earned them the commendation of judges. Meanwhile two students, namely WONG Chi-wing and YEUNG Kin-wai, of the Department of Information and Communications Technology, IVE (Tsing Yi), won the first runner-up of the same category.

For the category of Facebook Applications, the championship was clinched by LI Chung-hei, CHU Sai-chung and KEI Kwong-lam, students of the Department of Multimedia and Internet Technology, IVE (Lee Wai Lee). Their design was themed on the development of entrances and exits of the SCL stations, taking into account criteria like commuter traffic, distribution of population and the levels of business to be generated within respective districts. A question and answer segment was added to the game to test gamers’ familiarity with the SCL. KEI Kwong-lam said when designing the Facebook game, they had to put their game development software skills to full use and at the same time ensuring the relevance of the game to the theme of the competition. Indeed a challenging task.

The Shatin to Central Link (SCL) E-Game Design Competition, open to all tertiary students, was co-organised by the MTR Corporation and the Hong Kong Computer Society with a view to translating the complicated process of railway planning into simple web language through the creative mind of the younger generations. The competition awarded the Grand Award, and championship, first runner-up, second runner-up and merit awards for each category. Winners of the Grand Award and the championship of respective categories were presented the cash prizes of HK$5,000 and HK$3,000.
