The first cohort of senior secondary students who have enrolled in Applied Learning Course in Fashion Design offered by the Vocational Training Council (VTC) will graduate next year. To showcase the fruit of their learning, over a hundred students participated in the “my STYLE Fashion and Hair Show” hosted by the VTC last Saturday (24 September) at the Hong Kong International Trade & Exhibition Centre.
The competition consisted of two parts, namely “Fashion and Image Design” and “Hair Design”. Secondary students from various schools competed for 10 awards, such as “Total Image Design”, “Most Creative Award”, “Best Hair Design” and “Best Performance”. Prudence MAK, a renowned designer and Karen CHAN, Image Director of TVB Limited were invited as adjudicators and prize presenters.
Three students from Man Kiu College grabbed the championship of “Total Image Design” as well as “Most Creative Award” with their design “Swan - La Danse”. Inspired by the film “Black Swan”, the collection consisted of 4 women’s stage wear. Made of yarn and zippers, the ballet dress featuring black, white and brown was a manifestation of the bright and gloomy aspects of human nature. The first runner-up went to 4 students from Lam Tai Fai College with their design “Candy Floss”.
The championship of “Best Hair Design” went to a team of 4 students from different secondary schools. With butterfly as the theme, the team demonstrated its creativity and applied hair styling techniques to transform a hair bun into a flying butterfly.
The Education Bureau piloted the Applied Learning Courses in 2003/04. In support of this initiative, over sixteen thousand students have since enrolled on the Applied Learning Courses offered by VTC. Over the years, the number of secondary schools which offered the courses in collaboration with VTC has been steadily increasing from 7 initially to nearly 50. Among the Applied Learning Courses, “Image Design” which teaches fashion, hairstyling and image design, emerged as one of the most popular courses. Starting from 2010/11 academic year, the course is formally listed as an elective subject under the senior secondary academic structure. The course is of two-year duration (Secondary 5 and 6). About 800 students will graduate next year.
