VTC participates in Education & Careers Expo 2015 showcasing student achievements and providing info on programme options

28 January 2015

The Vocational Training Council (VTC) will take part in the Education & Careers Expo 2015 scheduled for 5 to 8 February (Thursday to Sunday) and held in the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre at Wan Chai (Annex 1). A one-stop booth will be mounted offering information on its vocational education and training (VET) programmes for young people and in-service sector to plan their studies and career development. On-spot application for the programmes is accepted.

This year, the concept of “Steps to Success” has been selected for the booth design. Again HKDI students participated in the design process. Bringing out the idea that the road to success must be paved by personal initiative i.e. “steps” of individuals, and that VTC is there to assist students, the fascia of the booth design is crowned by a prism with refractions beaming from down to top. The design signifies the premium progression ladder provided by the comprehensive and flexible VET programmes of VTC that offer students a chance to scale the ladder, unleash their potential and realise their dreams.

A highlight of the VTC showcase this year is the close partnership with industry and the successful outcomes. Recently HKDI interior design students gave birth to unique and chic window display for the shop front of local fashion brand G2000. The latter will be interested to apply some of their design ideas into actual implementation. The design blueprint will be exhibited in the Expo.

To enable visiting students to better understand VET and the progression prospects, VTC will arrange VET expert to introduce programme options available. In tandem, VTC collaborates with the organiser to host the “Apprenticeship to Professional” talks and invites VTC students and alumni as well as representatives from MTR Corporation and Gammon Construction to share the insights of the latter on industry development and the successful outcomes of their partnership with VTC in training up the local workforce (Annex 2).

The programme offerings of various member institutions of the VTC will be showcased, including the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi), the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE), the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI), the International Culinary Institute (ICI), the Hospitality Industry Training & Development Centre (HITDC), the Chinese Cuisine Training Institute (CCTI) and the Youth College, with designated support to address enquiries about studies and training. In 2015/16 academic year, the VTC will offer some 19,000 study places by around 120 full-time programmes leading to the award of Degree, Higher Diploma, Foundation Diploma (Level 3) and the Diploma in Vocational Education. Interested Secondary 6 students can apply for the programmes on the spot. Students can also apply through the VTC Admissions Homepage from today to 8 March (Annex 3).

Other student works will also be presented including an HKDI graduate’s all-in-one food preparation station that won the Silver Award (Student Group) in the category of Home Interior Products - Kitchen Appliances at the International Design Awards, and the HKDI interior design student’s champion pendant lamp “Cohesion” of the Student Category of the 7th Hong Kong Lighting Design Competition unique for its lampshade assembled out of drinking straws.  Another exhibit is the Smart School Bag co-developed by IVE and HKDI students and teachers that helps, by means of technology, cultivate the self-management abilities of schoolers to pack up and prevent them from being over-burdened and get hurt in the spine.

Performances like student dances and musical performances as well as demonstrations on hair styling and make up, jewellery making, cocktail preparation and handmade udon noodles are staged as well showcasing to all the diversity of VTC programmes (Annex 2).
