New THEi campus wins Green Building Award for sustainable design

27 November 2014

The overall architectural design and construction works of the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi) realises the concept of sustainability. With a view to creating an interactive learning and green environment for students, the eco-friendly design won the Green Building Award 2014 (New Buildings Category - Building Projects under Design) this year.

The judging panel commended the sustainable design of THEi that provides solutions to the micro-climate issue. The project makes use of integrated vertical greens to complement the surrounding natural environment setting the direction of future architectural design of the campus.

Located at Chai Wan, the new THEi Campus marries environmentalism with modernity and a spacious learning environment. The twin-tower design optimises air ventilation and makes good use of the natural geographical environment providing direct access to the sea and hillside views. The twin-tower main building will face north-south, effectively buffering solar heat and noise. The green campus will provide students with a lively and interactive learning environment.

For the construction works and material use, the new campus takes forward the eco-friendly mission through the likes of modular design, spatial adaptability, recycled contents and sustainable timber. On energy conservation, the campus uses the Energy Hierarchy Approach to save overall energy use by 30% by maximising natural ventilation and taking a suitable ratio of window and wall. The campus will also introduce water conservation fixtures and a rainwater collecting system for irrigation that will save water use.

The Green Building Award is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council and the Professional Green Building Council. The award aims to provide recognition to building-related projects with outstanding performance and contributions in sustainability and the built environment, as well as to transform the mainstream market towards wider adoption of sustainable planning, design, construction, management, operation, maintenance, renovation and demolition of buildings. 90 entries of Hong Kong and Asia Pacific building projects were received this year.

The Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi) is a member of VTC Group. It offers vocationally-oriented degree programmes across three faculties: Design, Management and Hospitality, and Science and Technology. The programmes are offered in areas where the VTC has strengths, and which are also growth industries not only in Hong Kong but also across the region. They feature the synthesis of knowledge acquisition and practical applications that enable students to grow into professionally-competent graduates. With its strong links with industry partners, THEi provides students with a vital platform for enhanced development.
